Federal and county investigators searched offices and storage facilities at Sonoma State University this week, looking for evidence related to 20 grants awarded to a now-defunct campus department, school officials said.
The department - the California Institute for Human Service, which trained Head Start teachers, among other activities - was shut down in 2007 under suspicion that its administrators mishandled more than $2 million in state and federal grant money.
On Thursday, the FBI, the Sonoma County district attorney, and inspectors from the federal Health and Human Services Department searched the university's administrative and financial offices, as well as a warehouse, according to a message from campus President Ruben Arminana posted on the school's Web site.

Asked what material was removed from the campus on Thursday, Sonoma County Assistant District Attorney Diana Gomez declined to comment.
