Teacher Emphasizes Old-Fashioned Etiquette
AOL News ^

In addition to the three R’s, boys at one Arizona public high school have spent the past year learning to open doors for girls, pull out chairs for their female classmates and stand when a girl enters a room.

Incorporating etiquette lessons into the classroom was the brainchild of Cord Ivanyi, a Latin teacher at Gilbert Classical Academy, a public college prep school 30 miles east of Phoenix. Courtesy of Cord Ivanyi Male students in Cord Ivanyi’s Latin class at Gilbert Classical Academy high school have learned such etiquette techniques as seating the girls at their desks.

“I teach old-fashioned subjects,” Ivanyi told AOL News, “so I don’t think I’m doing anyone a disservice by promoting oldfashioned traditions.”

A teacher for 14 years, Ivanyi said he was inspired to start demonstrating what he considers proper etiquette after witnessing the coarse behavior that some of the boys in his classes displayed toward the girls.

“Boys treat girls pretty roughly,” he said. “And there was so much disruption, so I decided to do something about it.”

Sons raised in the South - still using the “yes m’am, no sir” etiquette as adults, which their Nawthern friends’ parents (of all races)- find remarkable, but endearing.

...learning to open doors for girls, pull out chairs for their female classmates and stand when a girl enters a room...

We had to do this at Roser Park Elementary School in St. Pete FL in 1960. It was funny to watch my fellow 4th graders trip all over themselves to pull the chair out for the prettiest girls in the cafeteria. The rules were changed so that you only had to pull the chair out if the girl was next to you. Too many unattractive and overweight damsels were left standing otherwise.
When I moved back up North, my yes ma’ams and yes sirs were seen as mocking and disrespectful. I continued the practice anyway...

Good manners simply symbolize respect for oneself and others.

We also need to keep this away from Nancy Pelosi.....

I voted a thumbs up on the poll....what is wrong with the 10% disagreed with the teaching of etiquette....you respect others you respect yourself.....

Let's hope it's not as one-sided as that makes it sound.

While I have no objection to any of those things, I would hope that they ALSO teach young ladies that underwear should be worn UNDER something, and to accept such gentlemanly courtesies with grace and not whining.

Polite young men are more likely to be mentored by grown men, whereas smartasses are dismissed and not worth the trouble.

I have seen this in the shooting sports particularly.

This teacher’s gig is up.**src on*** This tracher needs to stop teaching boys to be condescending towards girls. Girls can open their own doors and seat themselves. If that means boys treat them like dirt that is better than treating girls like fragile flowers.***src off***

Well, should these young gentlemen take these lessons to heart and continue them beyond Latin Class and into college, they will quickly and easily be able to detect those young women who could make suitable life partners by their reactions to these attentions.

Indeed. But it should be pointed out to the young ladies that it’s NOT all about what the gentlemen are supposed to do.

I will never forget the day I had an older woman give me a real dress down for responding, "Yes Ma'am." She said it was rude and offensive.

My granddaughter and grandson have impeccable etiquette because they have been raised with it, it is amazing how many doors it opens for them. Older people and teachers love them.

It seems to me that there has to be some kind of lawsuit that a sharp lawyer can figure out. This is a public school, so deep pockets to grab at.

Any ideas?

It’s hard to believe they have desks with real chairs, instead of the single-unit torture devices. It must be a great place.

That’s exactly why it will benefit the young men to continue this practice......they will encounter young ladies who “get it” and those who don’t, and will discover very quickly to which group a particular woman belongs.
