Allied bid for Obama to remove US European nuclear stockpile

European NATO allies are to urge President Barack Obama to remove all remaining US nuclear weapons from European soil, as domestic pressure grows to rid its soil of outdated Cold War-era aerial bombs. Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands and Norway will call "in the coming weeks" for more than 200 American warheads, mostly stocked in Italy and Turkey, to be taken back, a spokesman for Prime Minister Yves Leterme told AFP.

A joint proposal by the five NATO members will demand "that nuclear arms on European soil belonging to other NATO member states are removed," Dominique Dehaene said.

Only the United States has nuclear arms stored in other NATO member states in Europe, he added. The proposal does not refer to the distinct, and more modern British and French nuclear arsenals.

"It's a question of launching the debate at the heart of NATO," Dehaene stressed, underlining it would form part of broader disarmament talks also focused on conventional weapons.

Former NATO chief Willy Claes and three more senior Belgian political figures urged such a call in Friday's Belgian press, citing "Obama's pledge to work to eliminate all nuclear weapons."

A statement from Leterme stressed that "Belgium is in favour of a world without nuclear weapons and advocates this position at the heart of NATO," in preparation for a New York conference in May on global nuclear arms non-proliferation efforts

When we get a real government and get our act back together, we should conquer western Europe and save them from themselves. Probably need fewer divisions than Iraq.

We need to make them sign a treaty stating that if we do this then they not need ask for our help if Russia turns hostile towards them after we remove the Missiles and Warheads. We came to their aid twice before in WW1 and WW2 and have been a deterence for them all during the cold war. I say if they want our weapons out of their countries then they are on their own.

We do not to sign any treaty. These nuclear weapons are on U.S. Air Force Bases and on U.S. property. We can decide when to take them

No. With the growing Russian threat towards Poland, the Baltic states and Eastern Europe we should keep all B-61 bombs where they are.

The map is accurate to where US nuclear ordinance is stationed in Europe.

Tese bombs at these bases are very well protected by Air Force Security and in underground bunkers. These are the same Air Force security that protect out ICBM bases.

We could move the bases to the eastern European countries that would welcome them.

Those bases in Europe are leased from the respective governments. They are not U.S. property. If those governments decide tomorrow that the U.S. must remove the nukes. Guess what, those nukes are gone.

Yeah and validating everything they say about us.

How about let them defend their selves, and we no longer protect them. Why is it the tax payer responsibility to protect them?

Yes, these tactical nukes are under the auspices of NATO. If NATO wants them removed as this article may indicate, it’s back to Kirtland AFB they go.
