MIAMI In her 88 years, Florence Siegel has learned how to relax: A glass of red wine. A crisp copy of The New York Times, if she can wrest it from her husband. Some classical music, preferably Bach. And every night like clockwork, she lifts a pipe to her lips and smokes marijuana.
Long a fixture among young people, use of the country's most popular illicit drug is now growing among the AARP set, as the massive generation of baby boomers who came of age in the 1960s and '70s grows older.
The number of people aged 50 and older reporting marijuana use in the prior year went up from 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent from 2002 to 2008, according to surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Duuuude. I can’t find my teeth.
If she’s 88, she’s no Boomer.
2.9% isn’t really that bad, but it is still insanely stupid.
Your oldest boomer isn't anywhere close to 88.
Try 64.
You are right she is not a boomer. I listen to Ryan Farish music instead of pot to relax.
I’m curious to know if reading the NYT causes her to smoke pot. I can’t read that thing - but, of course, I don’t smoke pot either.
True. The Boomers appeared in ‘45-’46 after WWII. I was/am one.
Some people use it for pain relief. Seriously.
2.9% isnt really that bad, but it is still insanely stupid.
3% is a miniscule amount. Take ANY activity and you’ll probably find more than 3% engage in it.
Hunting.
Fishing.
Dyed hair.
Playing the drums.
Tap dance.
Fold origami.
I would wager more than 3% of the poplulation engages in all of those activities.
3% is basicly saying nobody does it.
Boomers, still the most worthless generation of Americans.
The New York Times market, elderly stoners...

Insanely stupid????
So you don’t fault the old guy his whiskey, beer, wine or cigarettes, but it is insanely stupid to smoke some reefer as a retiree?
What exactly makes this insanely stupid?
As a weight lifter in college, pot definitely helped me to reduce the pain between sessions. Unfortunately, it also made me feel invincible since it was masking bigger problems, and as a result, I have chronic lower back pain (No, I don’t smoke pot anymore).
Aside from the analgesic benefits, pot causes me overeat and when I tried to come off of it, my anxiety attacks returned. I’ve been clean for a few years now, and I have to say that I would never go back. If others want to do it, so be it. For me, a glass of scotch and a Cuban will do me just fine, thanks!
Quite a few boomers smoke weed. I know a few of ‘em. So what? Add half a viagra, put on Bad Company, and the old lady dont look so bad...
The days of Reefer Madness are slowly coming to an end, & rightfully so.
Stupid at any age, and shows poor judgement.
“.....Add half a viagra, put on Bad Company, and the old lady dont look so bad...”
...LOL!..good one Olepap
