Marijuana use by seniors goes up as boomers age

MIAMI – In her 88 years, Florence Siegel has learned how to relax: A glass of red wine. A crisp copy of The New York Times, if she can wrest it from her husband. Some classical music, preferably Bach. And every night like clockwork, she lifts a pipe to her lips and smokes marijuana.

Long a fixture among young people, use of the country's most popular illicit drug is now growing among the AARP set, as the massive generation of baby boomers who came of age in the 1960s and '70s grows older.

The number of people aged 50 and older reporting marijuana use in the prior year went up from 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent from 2002 to 2008, according to surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

What a nothing-burger of a story. Of course more people over 50 are smoking weed. Duh! I am surprised however that so many people actually admitted to it. 5.1% between 55 and 59? I’ll bet it’s more than that but this hardly means we’re all going to “hell in a hand basket”. Seniors get handed worse things for them in the form of prescriptions.

Boomers, still the most worthless generation of Americans

Quite an interesting argument that I always enjoy debating in engaging in, being an amateur historian. It does seem like the baby boomer generation did a lot of damage, but how many actually did the whole leftist thing verses those that silently just tried to live a decent life or went to Vietnam? Also, is it the boomer generation to blame or the generation that raised them (I know that may not be too popular a opinion to voice as it was the "Greatest Generation" that gave us the boomers)? Just some interesting things I always enjoy talking about.

Remember Gramps, Oxycontin good, marijuana bad. Now take some of your pain pills and quit telling me about how you toured with the Greatful Dead.

And what about that generation before the “Greatest Generation”? The ones who ignored the rise of fascism and pursued all sorts of FDR Keynesian experiments prolonging the depression? And what about that idiot generation that was responsible for prohibition? One can go on and on throughout history to find generations worthy of just as much disdain as Boomers.
