The way the story is worded makes it sound like he was carrying the gun when he came home to find his home being burglarized. I consider coming home to a supposedly-empty house to be an extremely vulnerable time. I am giving potential intruders a few minutes warning of my approach -- enough time to prepare, conceal themselves and lay a trap.
A couple of dogs and a handgun are your best friends.
