Stupak Not On Board With ObamaCare 2.0
IBD's Capital Hill ^ | 2/23/2010 | David Hogberg

Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., says he’s not satisfied with President Obama’s latest health care initiative, because it largely follows the Senate’s softer language on abortion funding. Stupak’s spokeswoman e-mailed a statement late Monday: “Unfortunately, the President’s proposal encompasses the Senate language allowing public funding of abortion. The Senate language is a significant departure from current law and is unacceptable.” With Stupak still opposed, it is unlikely that Speaker Pelosi has the votes in the House

CHECKMATE!

They cannot fix the abortion language in reconciliation without completely violating the purpose of reconciliation.

hmmmm .... they may still try then.

I hope he sticks with it. I’m not so sure, and I don’t trust him. Both times when I heard him speak at a town hall meeting and one of his phone meetings, you’d think he was ready to jump on the health care wagon. He talks it up pretty good. And when pressed about the abortion issue, he wouldn’t 100% commit.

The social utopian dreams of the progressives dashed to pieces by an overreach on abortion. If they had just left it alone they would be home free. Their desire to publicly fund abortions is the death knell for this monstrosity. For the house to pass it, the Stupak ammendment was a requirement. Pelosi and Reid shafted Stupak with the Senate version. He will not budge and is adamant about perserving existing law on funding abortions.

When I heard him on WJR this morning, he won’t support it. Don’t think he’ll back down.

I sure hope not. Government run health care would be a travesty.

The only hope is that they do try to ram abortion in this plan, Pro Life Dems will stop it, I hope. Don’t know how many votes there are, but Stupak sounded like he could stop it.

I liked Rush’s analogy yesterday.

Socialized healthcare is the left’s “precious”, their “One Ring” whose possession means more to them than [political] life itself.

However, they are facing even more nefarious forces among those who INSIST that the entire nation be complicit, via tax dollars, in the slaughter of the unborn.

Has Stupak ever voted for abortion funding? Not that I know of. But if so, link please. I need to know.

I’m sure obama could do a campaign stop and a photo shoot in his district, bring along a billion dollar bag of money like he did in Vegas and all will be well.

I'm in the same place as you, MsLady -- Stupak had me all over this forum for months, repeating his boast that unless the final bill includes the Hyde language, he had the pro-life Dem votes to kill the bill outright, I heard him say this twice, once at the beginning of the whole thing, the first legislation going through the House committees, then several weeks later, an interview on Fox News. It was extremely disappointing to see the video linked here where Stupak later than that Fox interview is talking to constituents, telling them he will vote for final passage with or without Hyde, "Well, we tried, didn't we?" his retort to their objections.

I'm not convinced now, the double-speak and also, the fact that he never stresses the Hyde language any more. The so-called abortion restrictions proposed amount to no more than accounting gimmicks, they in no way bar federal funding of abortion procedures. If he and his pro-life Dem colleagues are serious, they would explain this as their objection and not give us the wishy-washy replies.

I'm just not convinced we can trust Stupak, we may need to focus effort on other pro-life Dems. It's not like he's the only one, after all.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.)

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_tricarefees_blocked_100709w

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.

Snip

The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

Bambi doesn't keep his promises...so buyer beware.

I agree!!! I felt like he was double speaking at times. Just your regular run of the mill politician. I know many might jump on me for this but, I felt the same way about Scott Brown after I heard his first speech after his election. We are in desperate need for some George Washingtons, and Ronald Reagans.

Agreed. THere are probably some similar things on the right.

Lets say the GOP/conservatives win a huge majority over the next 2 cycles and win the WH in 2012 with Palin, Romney, whoever.

Lets say because of that they have the chance to finally end abortion, they have the votes to pass the human life qamendment.

Now lets also say that polls and all the evidence suggests that if they do so, their majority will vanish and they’ll pay a huge price.

I’d reckon there’d be a huge amount of conservatives who would be ok with that. Who’d say “fine, go ahead, we’ll never be in this position again. we have to take advantage”

I think that’s where the left is now. It’s literally now or never for them.
