Some women who protested at the Islamic Center of Washington, wanting to be able to worship in the main prayer hall with their male counterparts, were asked to leave by the police. But they say their struggle will continue. Carpets with intricate designs cover the floors of the main prayer hall and turquoise tiles line the walls. But the source of contention is a small room created with seven foot high wooden walls. Jannah B'int Hannah describes how she feels in there where she cannot see the imam, or leader of the mosque, speak.
"Boxed in, stifling, suffocating and totally a second class citizen," says Hannah.
Over the weekend, Hannah and approximately 20 other women prayed in the main hall, but D.C. police were called. They asked them to leave or be arrested.
Syed Burmi, the imam of Islamic Society of Western Maryland, says the physical separation helps maintain women's privacy and modesty as well as keeps the focus on prayer...
In two out of every three American mosques, women of separate prayer spaces around the country. Asra Nomani is a leading Islamic feminist...
"We have this generation of American muslim women who are saying look you want us to go to Harvard, to rise to the highest level of Wall Street firms and you want us to sit where in the mosque?," says Nomani.
Women activists say they will continue to try to pray in the main hall until this policy changes.

It’s been a while since I tangled with some of those guys. I will see if I can find some.
Interestingly, when the Washington Post reported this story, it OMITTED the part about the participation of the DC police in enforcing gender separation.
...sometimes I think that Islam in America will be worn down by women’s rights, rock music, strip clubs, whiskey ect....how ya keep ‘em down at the mosque after they’ve seen MTV?
If these Islamic Feminists (which under Sharia might be a contradiction in terms) keep it up there are apt to be a lot of female heads rolling around the streets of Washington.
Islam cannot and I opine will not tolerate such “uppity” women within the Caliphate, including the American Caliphate.
Before this movement spreads very far, I predict that it will be nipped in the proverbial blood... errr... I mean “bud”.
Bash Christians as some will; they have not, by and large, to my knowledge anyway, routinely tortured, mutilated, or murdered people for disagreeing with them since the early 1600s.
I don’t think that this latest Islamic Women’s Lib movement is going to end all that well for them - especially now that the Mullahs have got the DCPD enforcing Sharia “Law” for them.
Stay tuned...
I don’t recall any Christian advocating violence of any kind on Free Republic.....Must have overlooked the posts.....
That is what I was thinking but I didn’t know just how to say it!
I didn't say that.
If NOW had any cred at all they would get behind this.
I'm with you. That's exactly what the First Amendment says, and that makes our God-given right a legal right. I hope these women will look at the "faith" that treats them like goats (and, no, I won't elaborate or make the obvious jokes) and at God's path, and convert from Islam to a real faith.
The AM's do a good job of taking them off.
In order for many of these women to leave Islam, they would have to divorce their husbands. What grounds would a Christian church accept for divorce under these circumstances?
Perhaps she might find more comfortable settings for worship if she looked to Christ instead of a moon worshipper.
It certainly says something about the free exercise of religion and private property.
She was tresspassing.
Segregation by sex is hardly unusual in religion.
Judaism treats women equally, but you divide by sex to prevent distraction.
From viewing the Syrian beauties coming out of the Ocean Parkway Synagogue, I can see why.
I have to admit, when I was in my early teens, I spent more time looking at women's legs than whatever the Priest said.
She was tresspassing. That’s a crime.
How was she trespassing? It is her place of worship, and it is open, as far as I can tell, to the public. What I don’t get is why go somewhere you’re not wanted? Find another religion. Just because segregation by sex isn’t isn’t unusual doesn’t make it any less Stone Age.
“How was she trespassing?”
It’s private property. I presume it is owned by a non-profit corporation of some kind. The agents of the corporation (e.g., the iman) did not want her there. She refused. That’s tresspassing.
“Just because segregation by sex isnt isnt unusual doesnt make it any less Stone Age.”
I suppose. I have been to less Orthodox shuls and more Orthodox shuls. Some with a symbolic divider, some with a large one.
When I was a kid, I was certainly looking at the young women my age when I had the opportunity (and vice versa).
Apparently they are not Bible based Christians if they condone violence against women in marriage or any other instance.....
