Many are the problems that are cast aside when the subject is dealing with mental illness. Relatives cannot force someone to seek treatment against their will, and the law is reluctant to deal with them either. Years ago, State run institutions were shuttered and patients literally put on the street for cost containment.

Years ago, State run institutions were shuttered and patients literally put on the street for cost containment. Actually, the ACLU sued claiming their civil rights were being violated by being locked up in state run mental facilities. The states were more than happy to be rid of that expense. Thus was born a huge and continuing body of mentally ill homeless on our streets.
