The Sheriff has turned investigaiton over to Fresno PD, they are not giving any specifics, other than, a woman came out of the residence at about 4pm, and the robot verified a deceased man in residence, they went in about 5pm.

They aren’t giving the suspects name, nor the deceased Fresno deputy, or the other Fresno deputy.

So when over 100 hundred law enforcement officials are at one spot, does that leave any of the surrounding area vulnerable to robberies or disputes getting out of hand?

No not really. Many officers are called back to duty on a moments notice for such things.
generally there is a minimum staffing to continue operating and handling the other calls.

I suppose it depends upon the town. The small (gang infested) town near where my mother lives had a big parade in honor of their new police station with all the cops.

There were 4 armed robberies during the parade since they knew all the cops were busy.

The hard reality is, gun control laws don’t mean jack when guns are still in the hands of crims. Strict or lenient, there would always be a shooting of a cop bound to happen.

This is not a ping list.

The suspect in the shooting was a Rickey Ray Liles, age 51. He is deceased and it isn't known if law enforcement killed him or if he died by his own hand.

The Reedley officer is brain dead, bringing the number of officers killed to two. He was in the Marines and was an Iraq war veteran.

Yesterday when the news was on I could hear the sounds of multiple shots being fired. The information was that the suspect would fire his weapon at the officers, and they would fire back.

The information was that Liles was causing trouble in the neighborhood. He was suspected of lighting a grass fire at a neighbor's house and at shooting at a local residence.

A witness at the scene said the officers went to the door and demanded entry. They waited and when there was no compliance they forced the door open and went inside. Then she heard multiple gunshots and the officers came running out. She believes this was when the first Deputy died. (He left behind a wife of 20 years) The news reported he was shot in the side. His name and the name of the other Deputy have not yet been released. The other injured Deputy had sustained an eye injury, and has been released from the hospital.

Thank you for the update, Enterprise.

This makes me sick. I wish there were words to let the sheriff’s office know how much they are appreciated.

Saying prayers for the two officers and their families. I will also be adding the Fresno County Sheriff’s Officers to my prayers.

May God Comfort all who suffer. May her give Sherriff Mims strength.

This is my final update. In consideration of the posters I will delete my list after this post.

The funeral for Homicide Detective, and SAR member Joel Whalenmaier was on Wednesday, 3 February 2010. Services began at 1000 am at the People's Church at Cedar/Herndon, in the city of Fresno.

Sheriff Margaret Mims and several Deputies spoke on their personal and professional relations with Deputy Whalenmaier. Deputy Chris Curtice, composed and sang a song in remembrance of Deputy Whalenmaier. Deputy Curtice had also served as a Homicide Detective, and he was assigned as one of the investigators in the well publicized triple murder of the Ewell Family in the unincorporated area known as "Sunnyside," located on the east side of the city of Fresno.

The procession went E/B on Herndon to the Clovis cemetary located at Villa/Herndon, in the City of Clovis. Hundreds of police officers from 40 California Counties led the procession with their code three lights on. Despite the weather, hundreds of people lined Herndon Avenue to watch the procession. Deputy Whalenmaier had been a fireman prior to joining the Sheriff's Department, and the Fresno Fire Department erected a spectacularly large American Flag over the procession route.

At the funeral, white doves were released, a bagpipe player played "Amazing Grace," a formation of helicopters flew overhead in a missing man formation, and there was a 21 gun salute. And appropriately, the rain held off until the end of the ceremony. Tears from heaven for a fallen earth angel.

This incident captured the sympathy of the community, and a heart grabbing "final log off" was broadcast over the air by a Sheriff's Department dispatcher who said:

"End of watch, February 25, 2010. 2 David 14 has been preempted for new assignment. Search and rescue from heaven. Rest in peace Wally."

A memorial service for Reedley Police Officer Javier Bejar will be held on Monday, February 8 at 1000 am at the Fresno Convention Center. Following the service, he will be buried in Reedley. Officer Bejar was the first Reedley Police officer killed in the line of duty in the Department's 100 year history.

Officer Bejar had served honorably in the U.S. Marines and did two tours in Iraq. He served equally honorably as a member of the Reedley Police Department.

And yet, Officer Bejar is continuing to serve with honor. He was brain dead, but had been kept on life support for several days so that his organs could be harvested. One of his kidneys went to a retired California Highway Patrolman.

Thank you all for your prayers and kind comments.
