Two words aired on Student-Run Television Thursday night brought UCSD into the national spotlight and into yet another campus free-speech debate. After Kris Gregorian, editor in chief of humor newspaper the Koala, said that protesters of last weeks controversial Compton Cookout party were ungrateful niggers on Channel 18, the Black Student Union declared a State of Emergency and issued a six-page list of demands to the university.
A.S. President Utsav Gupta immediately shut down SRTV. Then, on Friday afternoon, he unexpectedly decided to freeze all student fees toward media organizations.
The Feb. 15 Cookout was a racially themed fraternity party widely condemned by the BSU and the Student Affirmative Action Committee, along with Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.
The party was held at the home of Pi Kappa Alpha member Elliot Van Nostrand, who was also responsible for creating the highly criticized Facebook event.
The PIKE active roster has been removed from the fraternitys Web site.
To complicate the matter further, a Youtube video has surfaced featuring black Internet personality Jiggaboo Jones, in which he claims the party was a promotional event for his DVD release. The video is widely linked in comments on news stories and forums used to prove party planners werent being racist.
Jones confirmed he was affiliated with the party.
I am very upset that they would pick out my fans to try to get back at me and to start this madness, he said.
Though IFC adviser Emily Feinstein stated the incident was neither funded nor sponsored by any fraternity, PIKE has received much of the blame. An anonymous member of PIKE said the fraternity is planning to sue the university for slander. Both Naoufal and Campuswide Senator Tobias Haglund, a member of PIKE, said they were unaware of this plan.

As I predicted.
The “campus lynching” note was a bit of a giveaway.
Ah, the awesome power of human stupidity...
I still wonder why these people whine when whiteys use slurs like these when they so freely use them on themselves.
Yes: They object to the N word and then call themselvs Jigaboo.
If it was a black Playboy club would they have Jungle Bunnies?
You can’t make this stuff up!
The Black students should have a “dress like a honkie” party to retaliate
Lord that was a badly written, badly edited story.
So, in summary. A student hosts a party on the behalf of a rapper trying to promote a new album.
And the university suspends the fraternity the student is a member of. Surprised they didn’t try to get his church’s tax exemption pulled.
Maybe the state should pull the acreditation from the college the kids attends.
Then, some guy at the school’s radio station makes a racist comment, and the school responds by freezing all money spent on student media. Maybe the feds should freeze all grant money sent to professors in this college.
It’s a college newspaper, what do you expect?
(University of California at San Diego, to be precise.)
There is no law that says college newspapers can’t take tips from the AP stylebook. This article was obviously not edited.
Pika-A, not Pike
Not exactly. A fraternity who would get duped into this deserves to go under. That’s just ignorant.
I assume that Elliott Van Nostrand is not related to Dr. Martin Van Nostrand of Seinfeld fame . . . .
I wonder if Michael Richards would have anything to say about this party.
