Professor’s Killing of Brother Will Be Focus of an Inquest

CANTON, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts prosecutor ordered an inquest Thursday into the fatal shooting of Amy Bishop’s brother, saying there are new questions about whether it was the accident that investigators concluded at the time.

The handling of the case has been under scrutiny since Dr. Bishop, a neuroscientist, was accused of killing three faculty colleagues on Feb. 12 in a shooting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

In announcing the inquest, William R. Keating, the Norfolk district attorney, revealed that investigators recently examined a photograph taken of Dr. Bishop’s bedroom shortly after her brother’s death in 1986 and enlarged it. They found a newspaper article that described someone killing a relative with a shotgun and then stealing a getaway car from a car dealership.

Dr. Bishop, then 21, shot and killed her brother, Seth, 18, with her father’s 12-gauge shotgun at their Braintree home. She then went to a car dealership and tried to commandeer a car, the police said. After her arrest, she told the police that the weapon had accidentally discharged.

“We were struck by how parallel the circumstances were,” Mr. Keating said, referring to the newspaper article. “That could go to the state of mind of Amy Bishop at the time.”

All of them should do jail time. This was obviously a cover up by someone at the urging of the mother (who held influence on the town counsel) and those three people might be alive now if they had done their job then.

Hey, cut her some slack, she was only a TA at the time.

Too little too late.
They could have stopped this bitch at the first murder, and now they’re just covering their asses.

As if there will be any finding of complicity against the parents.

This is so much posturing and nothing more.

I would like to see the husband investigated for the bomb attempt on the professor.

this video below mention’s Amy Bishop’s MOM

Also Amy’s Mom was on the police board and was great friends with the police chief ...

the mother of Amy Bishop is allowed to walk into an interview with a suspect, tell that suspect not to say anymore and demand of police that she not be asked any further questions!

Amy Bishop’s mom should be charged too ....

So, the method for whitewashing the deliberate “look the other way” will be “inquest.”

Witness reported talk of revenge in bomb case
Bishop spouse was described as angry
By Shelley Murphy

Globe Staff / February 23, 2010

Amy Bishop husband should be in jail too ....

The article goes into some detail of the mail bombing investigation. The Bishop’s refused LE (armed with a search warrant) entry into their home forcing them to break a window to enter, they refused to take a polygraph, they refused them consent to search an out building on the property.

They found items like those used in constructing the mail bomb in the house, receipts for radio shack & the business card for a bait and tackle shop that advertised black powder for sale. They weren’t able to tie the items found to the bomb itself.

...investigators recently examined a photograph taken of Dr. Bishop’s bedroom shortly after her brother’s death in 1986 and enlarged it. They found a newspaper article that described someone killing a relative with a shotgun and then stealing a getaway car from a car dealership.

If said newspaper was found in Bishop's bedroom, the author of this article should have explicitly stated so. And sketched out the forensics procedure by which the reported article was rendered readable and/ or retrieved from microfiche files.

As published, this article is as sloppily written as the 1986 police investigation was conducted, apparently.

Not picking on you, Pharmboy. Just exasperated w/ the low quality of the writing. The implication that the newspaper was found in Bishop's BR is certainly there but, in building a case, implications aren't good enough.

The system we have now does an excellent job of making sure that innocent people don't go to jail. Lord knows, it's almost impossible to put an innocent person to death. There are endless appeals, all sorts of reasons which a tough sentence ought not to be imposed. Our system is heavily stacked so that law-abiding citizens are not punished for things they didn't do.

I'll be honest: I hate it.

I really would like a system a bit more ruthless. Some people need to be put down like dogs. If the courts do it, fine. If the neighbors do it, fine. I'm sure innocent people will end up suffering. That would be a shame. But Amy Bishop shotgunned her brother in 1986 and if she'd been dealt with at the time, there would be three people in Huntsville who would still be alive.

Are we REALLY protecting innocent lives with out current system? It's not adding up for me.

After her arrest, she told the police that the weapon had accidentally discharged.

“Accidentally” discharged THREE TIMES.
Because she was “trying to learn to use” the shotgun.

While they're reviewing old mishandled cases, maybe they could put the Kopechnie Case on the list?

Very interesting...thanks for the link. That old police chief Polio should do some time also. Massachusetts does not have a good record in justice being served, eh? The Amiraults falsely prosecuted and imprisoned and Ted Kennedy let off...and Dukakis weekend furlough to multiple murderers. Sheesh...

There was an “inquest” for Ted Kennedy’s episode. Look how that turned out.

Of course, nothing really changes in MA. Skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother recently killed their father. He's out on $10,000 bail, living at home. I don't expect he'll serve any jail time.

And 20 years from now he may shoot 3 or 4 people in Kansas and the big question will be "How did they botch that investigation back in 2010?"
