New York's Paterson Won't Seek New Term
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 02-26-10 | JACOB GERSHMAN

New York Gov. David Paterson will drop his bid for election to a full term and plans to make a statement later Friday morning, media reports said.

The governor has faced intensifying pressure to abandon his campaign, as a senior aide quit his administration in outrage and the New York political world responded with disgust to allegations the state police and the Democratic governor interfered with a domestic-violence case involving a top aide.

Mr. Paterson's administration was plunged into disarray late Wednesday after it was reported by the New York Times that the governor and a member of his security detail had conversations with a woman pursing a protection order against a top administration aide, David Johnson, 37 years old, a close friend and adviser to Mr. Paterson.

Andrew Cuomo, who is also the Attorney General of the state and his office is investigating the allegations.

So, which is worse:

a) Having an aide who abuses his wife;

b) Bringing accusations against a sitting governor that he has an aide who abuses his wife, in order to get him out of your way in the primary.

I suppose Cuomo is just taking a leaf out of Obama’s playbook. Obama also regularly used crooked methods to remove his opponents from both parties.

Not that Cuomo needed any lessons in corruption, as he so clearly demonstrated during his years at HUD.

I suspect that Cuomo’s involement in the NYS pension money scandal is going to rival the HUD debacle.

I confess that I just don’t ‘get’ this story. What’d Patterson do? Threaten the woman? Do they have him on tape or something?

When this first came out a lot of people said that Patterson was ‘gone’, yet there were few details. Still are pretty few details if you ask me.

If this is a Cuomo power-play it’s a pretty weak one.

From Village Voice report 8-5-08) Andrew Cuomo, the youngest Housing and Urban Development secretary in history, made a series of decisions between 1997 and 2001 that gave birth to the country’s current crisis.

Cuomo took actions that—in combination with many other factors—helped plunge Fannie and Freddie into the subprime markets without putting in place the means to monitor their increasingly risky investments.

Cuomo turned the Federal Housing Administration mortgage program into a sweetheart lender with sky-high loan ceilings and no money down, and he legalized what a federal judge has branded “kickbacks” to brokers that have fueled the sale of overpriced and unsupportable loans. So, now they’ll beg Cuomo to run (the goal) as he innocently insists he’s has no interest.

And, Cuomo will then inherit the 160 member state police security detail ~the New York State Governor’s Republican Guard.

Just comes with the job…don’t you know.
