My mother wanted to name me Sydne(y) Claire because she thought it would look good on a book jacket in case I ever became an author. (This was a LOOOOOONG time ago). My paternal grandfather raised himself up on his elbow from his sick bad and scoffed, “Sydney! I had a HORSE named Sydney. I hope they name her after my mother.”
He died a week later and my father’s family prevailed, so I was named Elizabeth, which my mother immediately shortened with a nick name.
I like something a bit more substantial.
My kids’ names: Casey, Matthew, Katherine (Katie), Hannah, Timothy, Elijah, Sebastian, and Samuel.
I kinda like Latisha and Cedric.
There is that BBC comedy where all the Bouquet sisters are named after flowers. Hyacinth Bouquet, Rose Bouquet, Daisy Bouquet, & Violet Bouquet.
“The name Barack has gone up in popularity.”
Yeah.
I just named my pet toad “Barraque”.
I wanted to spell it different.
My daughter was in class with a girl named Monopoly. I asked my daughter if she had a sister named Parcheesi... she didn’t get it.
I spoke with a “Cinnamon” at GM headquarters yesterday.
Glad she’s working, but a stripper name can’t help.
I type the clinical records for a pediatric doc’s office. I am fascinated by the monikers some of these kids have. One day there were 3 Dakota’s, each one spelled differently.
Another trend I am noticing is the hyphenated last name. No longer does the paternal last name stand alone. The mother, not to be diminished, has given the kid her last name, too.
In my opinion, we are already solidly entrenched in a narcissistic culture....all a result of the ‘Me...Me...Me..’ mantra of the 70’s and 80’s.
There was no Ura Hogg. Governor Jim Hogg had one daughter, Ima, who was a great leady — founded the Houston Symphony and was a noted American Antique collector who filled her home at Bayou Bedn with beautiful, authentic antiques and donated all of them for the public to enjoy. Ima Hogg was revered in Houston.
How do you like “Latrina”?
I don’t think the baby names are as much a problem as the parents that give them. A good parent can correct for the narcissism that can come from a unique name.
I know a child from a church I used to attend named “Shekinah Glory” — which was apparently derived by throwing a dart at a Bible. I also know a “Splendyd”. Those are the two most unusual I can think of.
That being said — when my wife and I picked out names for our two (Reagan and Caleb) we wanted something distinctive, but not weird — and something that would be cute when they are kids, but taken seriously when they grow up.
The thing that drives me nuts is the intentional misspelling of more normal names (or the random inserting of “y”s in place of other vowels). Aimee, Olivya, Jordyn, etc.

Love that show. Think it’s called ‘Keeping Up Appearances.’
with most of them having been on a vegan diet people are naming their kids things like “Yippo” and “Lunesta” and naming their pets “Steve” and “Helen”.
I have twins named Samuel and Hannah, based upon a promise we made to God when we were trying to have children...
Awesome.
leady=lady
I'm with you.
And I believe that a person's character, accomplishments and behavior are what make them special, not their names.
Who would have thought that dudes with ordinary names like George, Thomas, Henry, Benjamin, John and William could ever amount to anything?
We have chosen regular family names for our kids.
Our 2 month old grand-nehew was named Denali. It means “I won’t be stuck in this little town for the rest of my life, I’m going places, people!” We’re thrilled with the name, as we’ve been there (as have his parents). Too bad I had to explain the meaning to ‘Nali’s grampa..but once he got it, he really GOT it!!
At least it’s not “Sharika”!
“Frozen Fish” Is the damndest I’ve ever seen. You can see it from the street (downtown)on the tombstone of a member of a prominent NYC family “Fish”
