Tommy Thompson looks hard at Senate bid
Politico ^

Posted on 03/01/2010 5:39:35 AM PST by AlanD

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, who served four terms as Wisconsin governor, is securing financial pledges and ramping up his outreach to longtime political aides in preparation for a possible campaign against Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold.

Thompson has alerted his Washington-based law firm of his moves and is contacting key clients about the prospect of challenging Feingold, the most tangible signals yet that he’s seriously exploring a 2010 campaign.

“The governor has taken additional steps in the past week and will continue to do so over the next several weeks. If the meetings go well, you can expect to see an exploratory committee set up near the end of March,” former state commerce secretary and Thompson campaign manager Bill McCoshen told POLITICO.

Another longtime Thompson ally said the governor already has $200,000 in potential donations for a campaign that doesn’t yet exist.

“If you talked to me two weeks ago, I would have put it at a 50-50 shot. Now it’s at 70,” said the Thompson aide, who requested anonymity to avoid offending his friend. “He’s asking serious questions like, ‘Who would run the campaign? Who would do the fundraising? When would we announce? How much could we raise?’”

Thompson holds a slight 5-percentage-point edge, 48 percent to 43 percent, in the Rasmussen Poll.

And suddenly, Russ Feingold has a splitting headache.

*SIGH*

Just be VERY careful what you wish for, LOL! Tommy’s no saint, though he’s head and shoulders above Feingold.

Personally? He won’t run. Tommy is an attention-whore and that’s about it.

And...this article is from Politico, Newbie. They’d love nothing better than to choose the GOP candidate in this race.

It worked well when the MSM ‘chose’ Juan McCain for us. ;)

I would like to ask Mother Teresa to run, but she has passed away.

Nothing new for this newbie, Diane. We caught him pimping for McCain on several other threads, so now he dun found himself a new RINO ;-)

He was Secretary of HHS (Health & Human Services) from 2001 to 2005. Medicare and Medicaid’s unresolved deficits, fraud, waste & abuse are gonna hurt!

Thompson is a National Right To Life-RNC political insider favorite.

"The former Bush administration official even went so far as to issue a joint statement with former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt praising the Senate Finance Committee’s legislation as “another important step toward achieving the goal of health care reform this year,"

This is all I needed to read. What's he going to run as? The 41st vote to ensure socialized health care is passed? I don't mind a candidate who disagrees with conservatives on some issues. However, a Republican who thinks socialized medicine is a good idea is not one I could support. What's the point in having him over Feingold?

Why don’t you move to Wisconsin and run against Feingold yourself? I am pretty sure you would win in a landslide.

LOL Diana. Since I am a Minnesotan I can sympathize with you. The Republicans who run for statewide office often have to compromise a lot in order to get elected.

It’s sort of wierd, because out in the countryside (like in Wisconsin) the folks are very conservative, yet seem to think they should vote for Democrats. It’s getting better, but it will take another century to get Wisconsin and Minnesota people to actually vote Republican more often than not.

The only REAL Republican from Wisconsin that should have been President was Senator Joseph R. McCarthy.

The Great Man said “McCarthyism is Americanism with it’s sleeves rolled up”, and despite the decades of slander, libel and abuse by Communists, leftists, liberals and Democrats of all persuasions, the fact is that Senator Joe McCarthy was validated and vindicated by the release of the Venona transcripts of the old Soviet Union PROVING that McCarthy’s charges of Communist subversion of our federal government were deadly accurate.

Unfortunately, thanks to the left/liberal media of the day and their descendants, McCarthy was vilified and painted as a mad man when in fact he was a Patriot’s patriot, and all we need to do is to look at the 0bamunist thugs who seized our government (CBAN = Communists By Another Name), to see that McCarthy was a sage and a prophet before his time.

And Tommy Thompson isn’t even a pimple on McCarthy’s ass.

I’ll do it if you will pledge 1 million dollars for my campaign.

Did you read the article? There are two other Republican candidates running in the primary. Whoever heard of Marc Rubio or for that matter Scott Brown before this year? Thompson is not the only Republican candidate on the ballot. He’s sucking the air out for the other candidates, might not eventually run and supported frickin’ socialized medicine. Is that the type of candidate you want running against Feingold? Is it just the poll numbers showing him ahead of Feingold that has you wishing he would jump in?

If he ends up not running and has effectively strangled off the fund raising of the other two candidates, just don’t come on here after May and be complaining about him.

Why don't you? Where DO you live anyway? You don't live in Arizona, but you were beating the drum for McStain, and I'm betting you don't live in Wisconsin either so just what IS your game anyway, eh n00b?

Thompson has a full fledged case of P atomic Fever. If you care about him keep him out of the District.

"just what IS your game anyway, eh n00b?"

With the info you just supplied it seems to me that his game is to get Republicans elected no matter what they believe. With McCain, just like Thompson yeah I would probably vote for them over a democratic rival in the general election. However, what are primaries for if not to get the best conservative candidate on the ballot?

Thompson sounds like a squishy at best RINO. Not my first choice no matter what the polls say about his matchup against Feingold. If he would vote for Obama's health care, why put him in office? I mean there are some things even Snowe and Collins won't vote for.

I dont live in WI but i will say this
whoever gets through the primary should get everyones support to beat Feingold. If it is one of the two already running or Thompson they would be far better than Feingold that is for sure

Tommy needs to make up his mind. His hemming and hawing is making it impossible to get another quality candidate and could end up handing Russ a win when he’s very vulnerable.
