When I came back the country was in a really sorry state. Virtually everyone from my generation that didn't go into the military, was against the military. Fortunately my basic antisocial attitude meant that I really didn't give a sh@t. But a lot of other people did. And I have buried too many friends from the effects of alcohol and drugs.
I don't know the percentage, but a lot of them are gone.
There are “VIETNAM ERA VETERANS”, total 9.2 million.
There are “VIETNAM VETERANS” who served “IN COUNTRY”, total 2.590.000 million.
The mortality number for VIETNAM VETERANS WHO SERVED IN COUNTRY, is fairly accurate according to The Dept of Veterans Affairs statistics.
Disabled, Agent Orange victim since 2003, age 70.
Of the Vietnam vets I’ve known most are still alive. I’ll grant you though they do seem to have a higher than expected mortality rate.
