Porsche Showcases Gorgeous 78 MPG 918 Spyder Plug-in Hybrid Concept [720 hp, 3.2s 0-60]

Porsche unveiled its new 918 Spyder concept that not only brings sleek styling to the table, but also a wealth of high-tech powertrain goodness. Looking somewhat like a gorgeous mashup up of a Ferrari F430, Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche Boxster, and Porsche 911 GT1, the 918 Spyder concept features a mid-engine layout, seating for two people, and all-wheel drive.

The roadster also features dual side-exiting exhaust pipes on either side of the vehicle along with a nod to the past with an intriguing "disk" wheel design.

Being that this is a Porsche first and foremost, this vehicle is all about performance. Gone is the flat-6 that powers the mid-engined Boxster and Cayenne (along with the rear-engined 911) and in its place is a high-revving (9,200 rpm) V8 engine producing 500 hp. As if that wasn't enough, there are also two electric motors installed in the vehicle (one for the front axle, one for the rear axle). The electric motors add another 218 hp to the mix.

Something doesn’t add up here.

718 hp, <3300 pounds, all wheel drive, and it takes 3.2 seconds to hit 60?

The 911 turbo weighs 3500, has 500 hp, and claims 3.1 seconds.

The GT2 weighs 3200, is RWD, has 520 hp, and claims 3.2 seconds.

The weight on this 918 must be wrong, because batteries are incredibly heavy, and there are the motors as well. I would guess it’s more like 3800, and the hybrid gear just makes up for its own weight.

In that case, I’d say dump it, and make for a significantly lighter car with the 9200 rpm 500 hp V8. That would make for a very interesting alternative to the twin turbo flat 6.

He probably pronounces the name as “porsh” as well.

“Look at Maserati Quattroporte”

They actually did a study, and the engine noise of a Mas4 makes women horny.

I kid not:

Correct.

Last, best, Porsche 911: the 993 model.

Nice car, but it’s not a “Spyder.”

550, 550A, 550RS are “Spyders.”

The current Boxster “Spyder” is an abomination.

Was at the race where it first appeared in 1973. Saw one at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. A racecar for the ages. RIP Mark Donohue

Throw away the batteries and put in a big gas tank and they might have a car!

"Last, best, Porsche 911: the 993 model." I'll even go you one earlier... 1994 911 3.6 Turbo. It has always been my dream car. It's actually getting near an affordable (for me anyway) price.

Oh I would have LOVED to have actually seen one race. That must have been awesome. I have seen one but didn’t even get to hear it running. It was at a concourse show and the owner would not start it.

Seeing the old glory days Can Am Cars on the pace lap in formation was a breathtaking sight. They were very beautiful race cars.

You should be jailed for referring to a 911 as though it were an “also ran”, you f’idiot.

356’s and 911’s ARE Porsche.

I'm glad someone else thought the writer was a Philistine for that "afterthought".

Also, though I've never driven a Cayenne, I'm pretty sure it doesn't get its "giddy-up" from a flat six.
