WASHINGTON -- The U.S. will deliver this month to Pakistan 1,000 sophisticated laser-guided bomb kits that would enable the government there to strike insurgent targets with more precision.

The arms sale suggests that U.S. officials are trying to deepen America's relationship with Pakistan and increase military cooperation. The U.S. has been trying to encourage Pakistan to take a tougher stand against Taliban forces operating within its borders.

Lt. Col. Jeffry Glenn, an Air Force spokesman, said Tuesday the U.S. had delivered 1,000 MK-82 bombs to Pakistan last month. This month's shipment of kits would enable Pakistan to use sophisticated laser technology to guide the bombs to specific targets.

Doubt that our relationship will improve with India, with this deal.

Can anyone explain to me why we seem to be in bed with the Paki’s and have stiffed India?

The US aligned with Pakistan during the period of the “Nonaligned Movement” which was promoted by PM Nehru.

At the time, India wasn’t seen as a threat.
So, aligning with India would have been less useful than the alternative, which was to align with Pakistan.

By aligning with Pakistan, we were able to support “moderate” administrations and keep tabs on them. Our military aid to Pakistan wasn’t particularly threatening to India.

India later aligned with the USSR, but it didn’t provide the same threat as an unaligned (unsupervised) Pakistan.

When the soviets were at war in Afganistan the U.S. provided shoulder launched surface to air missiles.
Helped stop the soviets in their tracks.
Will this ultimately come back to bite us in the rear?

This could end up being a problem. The paks always get an itch in their tush to start a war with India, whenever they get some kind of superior technology. Waiting to see them do something crazy. Having their arses handed to them everytime does not deter them. Ofcourse, a bunch of Indian soldiers may end up paying with their lives.

Not really as most of them have since been fired or sold off. Those things don’t have the longest shelf life.
