Canada's warning against government health care
Washington Times ^ | March 2, 2010 | Editorial

President Obama and congressional Democrats are ramping up efforts to ram through a government takeover of the health care system. The vast majority of Americans are opposed to this bureaucratic power grab because they know government will do what it always does, which is increase cost while lowering efficiency and service. In case there's any doubt, all you have to do is look to our neighbor to the north for tales of doom and gloom that come with nationalized health care.

Canada provides a clear warning about government involvement in health care as even its most prominent citizens come to America for important procedures. Just last month, Danny Williams, the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, crossed the border to have a heart valve replaced in the United States.

Canadian doctors told Mr. Williams in December that his heart valve problems had become severe and that he needed immediate care or risked heart failure. He had two reasons for coming to the Land of the Free. One reason is the ability to choose the best procedure and the choice of the best doctors. Canadian doctors are still using an older heart surgery technique that requires breaking bones to reach the heart. The top-notch cardiac surgeon the premier picked in Florida had performed more than 8,000 open-heart surgeries and used a procedure that reaches the heart through a small incision under the arm, without breaking any ribs. This surgical procedure also requires much less time to recuperate. . . .

Yes - it's a bad idea unless you're a liberal Democrat looking to secure power for yourself forever.

I'm told that much of the work done by Congressional staff these days is to clear up constituent problems associated with Medicare and Social Security.

What will happen when not just seniors, but EVERYONE (except politicians and their families of course) is subject to nameless, faceless, far away bureaucrats? What happens when a government putz tells you that your spouse, child or other close family member cannot get life saving care?

Does it not stand to reason that when your Congressman's staff is overwhelmed with complaints against the National Socialized Health Care system that political supporters will receive preferential treatment? It is human nature to help friends first, especially friends who help you keep your job.

National Socialized Health Care will be the end of the rule of law and the embrace of the rule of man.

The end of liberty takes many steps in the encroachment of government upon the lives of the citizens.

When government finally has the controlling interest in our lives we will not be able to adequately control that government. This has already begun to happen here in the United States over the last 100 years, as is it happens, as government takes more and more control over our wallets and by extension our lives as a whole we have been losing more and more of our ability to control that same government.

Canadians like their system - until they get REALLY sick. And then it doesn’t matter because your days as a voter are numbered anyway or you are an elite who can come here. It’s a system where the opposition literally drops dead.

Canadians are crapping bricks because if we go socialist, where the hell are they going to come for urgent, top notch care? I suppose if Michelle is in charge of passing health care she'll keep a few hospitals reserved for cash paying Canadian customers.

Michelle shows some business like thinking and a record of success.

Obama should appoint her to an economic position. Her record is a lot better than most of the bozo’s he has now.
