(KFVS) - A preliminary earthquake report from the U.S. Geological Survey indicates a 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:37 p.m. CT was centered near East Prairie, Missouri.
No major damage has been reported, although many people have said they felt the quake. Students and faculty evacuated East Prairie High & Jr. High Schools as a precaution, but no damage has been found at either school.
There are reports coming in to the USGS that the earthquake was felt as far away as Lexington, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana.
The report indicates the quake was 5.1 miles below the surface of the earth.
"It was a relatively minor earthquake," said KFVS meteorologist John Dissauer. "The reason a lot of people probably felt this is because it was a relatively shallow earthquake. To compare it to the Chile earthquake that happened last weekend, that earthquake was almost 22 miles below the surface."
U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson released a statement shortly after the quake saying the earthquake underscores the need for individual preparedness and government readiness for a major event in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

When we had the 5.00, I was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee, hubby was still sleeping. It felt like a big close blast of dynamite but without the noise. I thought it was thunder but again, no noise. The shaking continued and my coffee spilled. It was more like the house was rocking, it seemed. I had never seen an earthquake before and it took a few seconds for it to register. I remember running down the hall yelling “Earthquake! Get up!” My husband was sitting up in bed going, “what what”. LOL He thought I was shaking the bed.
As a teen growing up in central IN (about 35 years ago) I felt an earthquake. I went outside and looked at the house because I though someone was outside shaking it.
Around 29 years ago, northeast Indiana in a big old 100 year old Catholic church for a Wednesday night Mass for my recently departed Grandfather. A 5-something somewhere and the racket from the pews in the old place was amazing, I went outside to see what was going on. Came back in and a nun from California clued me in on it.
I felt it in Cape Girardeau, Mo, but just barely. In fact it didn’t register in my mind as an earthquake, maybe more like someone doing some blasting in a quarry. On the other hand, the New Madrid fault will ruin a lot of people’s day if it really lets go. St. Louis is an old brick city and brick buildings don’t do earthquakes gracefully.
Really! I read that the last time it went off in the 1800’s that it was felt as far away as Boston! I’m close enough probably for some damage so hope this is just a fluke.
Wow! I could see that happening. I think we will seriously start looking for a place in the mountains in East Tennessee.
Did you read that excerpt from my book? It’s pretty long, but the book is even longer....570 pages. Most of it takes place in TN.
Yes I did. Every word of it. It was very interesting. I usually don’t get into long articles like this but I did read it. I had to stop and go shopping but I couldn’t wait to get back to it. My husband and I are seriously talking about selling our house in town and moving to the mountains and preparing for a disaster. We have felt a sense of foreboding for a long time now. Even if nothing happens, we will be living out our years close to our daughter and grandaughter and great grandson just like we wanted to.
Given a choice between east or west tennessee, I’d go WAY east!
