Chavez-Thompson wins Democratic nomination for Lt Gov (beats Ronnie Earle, Tom Delay prosecutor)

Labor leader Linda Chavez-Thompson won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor on Tuesday, capturing 53 percent of the primary vote against two opponents. She now faces incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the fall in a race that will be an uphill battle for the Democrat. Chavez-Thompson used her support from labor and Hispanic groups to establish a strong position in the race and also outspent her opponents - including former Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle - by a substantial margin.

Chavez-Thompson, 65, of San Antonio, is a former executive vice president of the AFL-CIO and a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee....

In seeking the nomination, Chavez-Thompson stayed close to her roots, sounding working class themes and accusing Republican leaders of losing touch with ordinary Texans. She will try to become the first Democrat to hold the state's number two job since Bob Bullock, who left office more than a decade ago. Dewhurst, who was unopposed in the Republican primary on Tuesday, has already raised $2.8 million for his campaign. He is expected to ride strong Republican trends in Texas that date back to the 1990s. No Democrat has held a statewide office since then.

Ironic that it would happen as Charles Rangel goes down for bigger ethics violations.

Earle should be in jail for his brazenly political indictment of Tom DeLay.

so the Governor and Lt Governor can be elected from different parties in TX?
interesting
will Perry win this thing? I hear White could be formidable opponent and that Perry is “weak” though i dont live in TX. Dems seem to think White has a good shot of winning the seat

If Kay Bailey Hutchison hadn’t tried to unseat Governor Perry, this would have been the high point of her day. Earle indicted her in 1993 for using state telephones for political purposes. Her defense attorney was able to maneuver in such a way as to force Ronnie Earl to withdraw the indictments. Earl had a very low rate of convictions on indictments of politicians. Notice Tom Delay still hasn’t been even indicted on anything. I really think the local Travis county DA should not have jurisdiction over state officials. Such cases should be handled by the state attorney general.

White might have had a chance in a normal year, but the Democrats have a serious head wind due to the unpopularity of the Obama administration.

White is going to have a tough time I feel, as the majority of Texans I’ve talked to do not really seem to feel that the City of Houston is culturally a part of Texas. (more like some big Northeastern city or third-world country in their opinion)

Debra Medina (RINO) has said she will not endorse Perry. She could still run third party or endorse another candidate.

If she runs, she could syphon off enough votes to make things go badly for Rick.

Gee, there's a shock.

Now that Kay has dropped out (and decided last night not to even consider a runoff if it went that close), the Republicans can finally take on Bill White, who ran against Rick Perry and not Farouk (D).

Bill White needs his negatives up. He’s trying for face recognition to become governor but ultimately he’s in the running for Kay’s Senate seat as well.

I hear John Sharp (D) is also a contender for that seat.

She attacked Kay Bailey on abortion but was unwilling to support the sonogram provision being discussed.

oy more fun with third parties
isnt Medina that 911 truther type? wonderful
honestly 2010 is a redistricting year the more state Govs the GOP picks up or keeps the better. Texas is a big state if the dems get a hold of it they could gerrymander a few house seats out of it.

Chris Bell threw a hissy fit when he lost his House seat to a black Democrat because of redistricting. He was the racist spoiled sport who launched the ethics probe of Tom DeLay as he was leaving Congress.

There’s nothing to suggest that DeLay wouldn’t have accepted the offer if he’d remained in office. It’s doubtful that the offer would have been ventured.

Ronnie Earl, it took him numerous Grand Juries to obtain an indictment against Tom Delay.
