Scott M. Matheson Jr. Circuit Court Nominee: Obama Buying Healthcare Votes?
Right Pundits ^ | March 4, 2010 | Shannon Bell

Posted on 03/04/2010 6:06:18 AM PST by La Lydia

President Obama has nominated Scott M. Matheson Jr. to the 10th circuit court of appeals; and in a completely unrelated event, Matheson’s brother, Utah congressman Jim Matheson was among a group of 10 democrats who met at the White House to discuss their votes on healthcare with the President. Jim Matheson had previously voted against the House healthcare bill, now Obama wants to talk it over.

Of course the allegations of bribery and buying votes have already surfaced and one can only gather that the nomination of Scott M. Matheson Jr. to the US circuit court has a secondary motive behind it. Let’s get the question out of the way. Did Obama nominate Scott Matheson to the US circuit court so his brother Jim will vote yes on Obamacare? There, I said it.

As the Weekly Standard points out, Congressman Jim Matheson voted twice against Obamacare; once in committee and again during the full house vote. He’s now considered one of the 10 undecided’s who could make or break Obama’s healthcare legacy.

The timing of Obama’s nomination of Scott M. Matheson Jr. is nothing short of suspicious. This nomination appears to be dubious at best, downright unethical at worst. Sure there’s no law against Obama nominating whomever he wants to the courts. He can nominate every democratic congressman’s brother or sister or father-in-law to any federal job he wants; it just doesn’t look good.

So who is Scott M. Matheson Jr.? He teaches at the College of Law at the University of Utah, he once taught at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, he was also a US Attorney for the district of Utah; he attended Stanford, Yale and Oxford. He’s no doubt qualified to serve as a federal appeals judge. But that’s not really the point is it? ...

This White House has proven time and time again that they will stoop to just about any level to get what they want. Obama’s nomination of Scott M. Matheson Jr. to the 10th Circuit court of appeals raises more questions than it gives answers. Here’s just a friendly prediction, Rep. Jim Matheson will miraculously see the error of his ways and cast a vote in the affirmative for Obamacare. Any takers?

re: “we cannot stop the communist takeover. . .not in 2010, not in 2012. . .”

You know, I would not have wanted to be freezing next to you at Valley Forge in 1777 with your defeatest attitude. Most people thought it was over for the ragtag Continental American army at that time, too.
It’s only “over” if we give up. Don’t be what Thomas Paine called a “fair-weather patriot.

Even if this guy takes the bench, every decision he makes will be shadowed by the way his brother obtained the office for him. Both of them are a disgrace to their religion and their state. And the amazing thing is that everyone involved — this UNSCRUPULOUS AND POWER-GRABBING family and the corrupt BO administration — for some reason assumed this would never become public, or that, if it did, not one would see anything out of the ordinary. But then again, everyone involved is a Democrat. It will be interesting to see how the Utah newspapers treat this episode.

What do you think the “spin” will be on this? Pure coincidence? They cant possibly believe anyone is that stupid (no matter how many times they call us that).

I called his DC office last night and it said his milbox was full. I then called his Salt Lake City office and gave him an earfull. For good measure I also e-mailed him this little message:

Dear Rep. Matheson,

I just read today that President Obama nominated your brother to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

Sir, you do understand that we Americans aren’t stupid...right? We know you’ve consistently voted against this healthcare nightmare that most Americans DO NOT WANT! If you now decide to vote for this under the reconciliation option, we’ll know without a shadow of the doubt that President Obama’s nomination of your brother to the 10th Circuit was his payment for your affirmative vote!

Here’s a fact: If you vote for this healthcare nightmare, we Utahans will vote you out of office!

GO UTAHANS!!! That letter was awesome. Very much to the point. I hope he realizes that he is about to become the new Ben Nelson. I don’t know much about him, does he care what his constituents feel? Some of these guys obviously don’t, but he has to know that the people of Utah are not with him, especially with regards to abortion. Right?

Wow!

Just called Rep. Matheson’s DC and got through, and spoke with an aid!

I asked her if he was planning on voting for this healthcare disaster and she said (paraphrasing): “Well, there’s no specific bill yet, and it would really be too early to specualte on if it will be something he will vote for...”

I then told her that we see what’s going on here, and we’re not stupid! I told her if he didn’t support it in the past, there’s no way in He** he could support it now, and if he does decide to support it now, we’ll know this was payment by Obama for his vote!

PLEASE CALL HIM!:

Rep. Scott Matheson (DC Office):
202-225-3011

Well, it’s a little weird here in Utah. Most of the State is very conservative (pro-life), but one of the counties/cities he represents is Salt Lake, which is very, very liberal! Not sure if you know, but the former Mayor of Salt Lake City was Rocky Anderson. This guy was a bigtime liberal nutcase that had wide support in Salt Lake City.

But still there might be hope. Matheson, for a Democrat, is still a fairly conservative guy. hopefully this will translate in to him continuing to reject this crap piece of legislation...notwithstanding his brother’s nomination to the 10th Cir. We just have to let him know that we see what Obama is trying to do!

By-the-way, thanks for the nice words about my e-mail to him!

Not one word yet, regarding conflict of interest.

“notwithstanding his brother’s nomination to the 10th Cir. We just have to let him know that we see what Obama is trying to do!”

Are the “means” justifiable in the eyes of Utahans? This business is so underhanded, any way you look at it. Do the Liberals in Utah get a bad taste in their mouth when they think about this, or is it “the end justifies the means” mentality that prevails?

It’s a little hard for some of us to guage. I have always thought of Utah as one of the places that I would really like to live in some day. I hope it is able to save face once the dust on this has settled.

As I said, most of the state is very conservative, but as you know, a lib is a lib no matter where you go. Sadly, I think you’re correct: “the end justifies the means.”

This being said, I’m hopefull Rep. Matheson will clearly understand, we see what’s going on here! I fact I relied these very sentiments to his staffer a little earlier this morning.

Oh, and it’s still a great place to live even if you’re not LDS. Very nice folks here :)

Thank you for the valuable insight, I’m sure it will prove to be very handy in the next few days (as things hit the fan). I’m afraid this is just the beginning...

You’re not alone. There are a number of us in Utah who don’t belong to the hegemony. We’re actively looking to boot both Matheson and Bennett this year. We’ll be coming after Hatch next.

Good point. I just wonder if his disgraceful appointment could cause every case he hears to be debated and retried, for it is now widespread knowledge that he’s a bought and paid for kind of guy.

Not a single word on the local TV news of the conflict of interest either. Just “oh isn’t it wonderful? Another Matheson following the family tradition” drivel.

BTW, JIm doesn’t really qualify as a blue dog. He’s more of a lap dog. Pet him right, and he curls up and licks your hand.
