Russia and India are expected to sign three contracts in military technical cooperation totaling $4 billion, including retrofitting the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier during Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's visit to India, Vedomosti Russian daily reported.

A $2.35-billion contract between Russia's state-controlled arms exporter Rosoboronexport and the Indian Defense Ministry on refitting the INS Vikramaditya (Admiral Gorshkov) and the $1.2-billion contract on delivery of MiG-29K/KUB carrier-based fighters will be signed during Putin's visit to India on March 11-12.

The Vikramaditya is currently undergoing repairs and refit at the Sevmash shipyard in Russia.

The initial refit agreement of $970 million went up to additional $1.5 billion India is expected to allocate to Sevmash shipyard which already expended the money that was allocated for the Vikramaditya's refit.

DNA India said that the countries might also sign an agreement on nuclear reactors in Kudankulam and in Haripur, a new nuclear park in West Bengal.

Further agreements will include fifth generation fighter aircraft project developed jointly by both countries, and work on a multi-role transport aircraft.

India has a long history of defense relations with Moscow. The current cooperation program until 2010 comprises about 200 joint projects, including the modernization of the Vikramaditya for the Indian Navy, the transfer of technology for the licensed assembly of T-90 tanks in India, the production of BrahMos missiles and the purchase of Smerch MLRS by India.

Anyone familiar with the Admiral Gorshkov conversion story would immediately know this article is from a Rooskie source.

India is probably closer to canceling the whole thing than bragging about buying some Rooskie Migs to land on it.

Russia has no fixed wing carrier experience. The Gorshkov was a decommissioned cruiser now in retrofit for about 8 years.

The whole deal looks like a couple of Defense Departments rip off.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Fool me once, shame on you
Fool me twice, shame on me

Has India never heard that?

Makes me kinda wish that the Kitty Hawk being offered to India were true. And now India opens its multirole combat aircraft bidding to western companies (Boeing, Lockheed, Dassault, Saab) is quite fitting. If the Kitty sale/transfer were true. then India would be in a position to tell the Russians enough. What would be then next, Hindustan reverse engineering the Flanker? Don’t discount it, it is well within their capabilities.

Rooskies can't even build a destroyer. They're buying four of them from France.

Chicoms don't know how to lay down a hull larger than a frigate.

Absolutely not. Current Indian manufacturing technology allows them to domestically build an aircraft perhaps at the level of a Mirage F-1.

In fact it is a challenge for them to license-build less complicated Soviet PGMs out of supplied parts.
As for Flanker it is Chinese who has way better technology than Indians and still struggling to duplicate it’s earlier engines with no success.
Reverse engineering is not working good today as soon as equipment bocome too much more complicated to build.

Largely true about the difficulty of reverse engineering technology.

Except that China has finally reverse engineered those Russian Su-30 engines as of early 2009. Their new J-11Bs are flying with their own WS-10 Engines.
