Meg Whitman Supports The $700 Billion Bank Bailout (TARP)
Meg Whitman markets herself as an alleged proponent of free market capitalism. But her actual record couldnt be further from the image she has peddled to California. In fact, Whitman championed the exact opposite by supporting the $700 billion bank bailout, infamously known as TARP.
When asked about the colossal governmental intervention and intrusion into the economy, Whitman repeatedly and ardently asserted her support for the massive redistribution of wealth from responsible taxpayers to reckless banks, calling it the right thing to do.
Whitman Supports The $700 Billion Bank Bailout (TARP), Calling It The Right Thing To Do:
Whitman Reiterated Her Support For The $700 Billion Bank Bailout And Said It Was The Right Thing To Do. QUESTION: The question I wanted to ask, is I understand from my research that you and Mr. Romney worked with Senator McCain on the bank bailout situation. Id like to know your position on the bank bailout situation. How do you feel about that from a business point of view? Thank you. MEG WHITMAN: Yeah, so youre right, I was working on John McCains campaign and Mitt Romney was one of the advisors on the campaign when Wall Street melted down, as you recall, about September 15th of 2008. And we convened a meeting of the senior economic advisors and in the end we actually all agreed that the plan to invest capital into the banks was the right thing to do, and what was Its very easy with 20/20 hindsight look back and say, gee, was that the right thing? I think we would all look back now and maybe say, I dont know that that was the right thing. At the time, it was everyone in that rooms best judgment, that if we decided to let these banks go, that the American economy was literally looking into the abyss. And you never know, right? You dont know what wouldve happened had we not done that bailout, but it was Johns judgment and all of his senior economic team, it was the right thing to do. Now you look back, you dont know the answer, but my view at the time was it was the right thing to do. (Meg Whitman, Remarks At San Diego Chamber Of Commerce, San Diego, CA, 2/25/10)
Whitman Advised Sen. John McCain To Support TARP:
On September 24, 2008, Sen. John McCain Met With Meg Whitman And Other Business Executives To Discuss The $700 Billion TARP Bailout. Republican presidential candidate John McCain met Wednesday with a panel of business executives to seek their opinions on the Bush administrations proposed $700 million [sic] bailout of U.S. financial markets. McCain said he wanted to discuss how we can make sure that the American people regain confidence on Main Street so that they can regain their confidence in Wall Street and in Washington.
Flanking McCain were former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, his one-time rival for the GOP presidential nomination, and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. Others in the meeting were John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, and John Thain, the CEO of Merrill Lynch before it was acquired by Bank of America earlier this month for a much-reduced value.
