Gone, Fishing?
National Review Online ^ | 3/11/2010 | Frank Miniter

So Pres. Barack Obama’s “Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force” has decided that the opinions of America’s 60 million anglers aren’t worthy of its consideration.

This task force, headed by the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), was charged with drafting a national ocean policy of marine spatial planning to manage U.S. ocean territory and the Great Lakes. Its recommendations — due out later this month — could be enacted by executive order.

Here’s why anglers, and freedom-loving Americans, should be alarmed: Without input from recreational anglers and the conservation groups that represent them — such as Trout Unlimited, the U.S. Recreational Fishing & Boating Coalition, and the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies — decisions made under this new national oceans policy could be used to close saltwater and freshwater recreational-fishing areas.

Oh well, good for Texas again. US doesn’t own our off shore. Anybody for fishing might have to come to Texas

Those idiots are intent upon pissing off Americans aren’t they? Hunting is next on the list.

its a different way of going for gun control. if you can’t hunt, what will you need guns for?

and when we told people it wouldn’t stop with smoking we were laughed at.

I wonder how many of these fishermen were all for smoking bans and increased taxes. now that the fed is coming after THEM, they don’t like it one bit.

This ISN’T about saving fish, it’s about CONTROL, period.

Yes it's all about control. Not to protect the fish.
Natural resources are there to be used.
Use responsibly but do use them.
It's a "Use it or lose it" thing.

How long is this anti-fishing insanity been brewing? Last night in NYC I was following a car displaying some sort of international no-fishing symbol. I only heard about this two days ago and some totalitarian @$$hole already has an associated anti-freedom magnet on his car!

(I don't fish BTW.)

Here in VA, a huge percentage of those who fish are black. Soon for them will be the conundrum — vote for pigment or vote for freedom?

Natural resources are there to be used.

I get the feeling natural resources will only be available to the elites, if Boy Zer0 gets his way.

I love fish, but absolutely hate fishing. I respect everyone who is into it, but it’s just not my thing. Bores me to death, I suck at it, and end up drinking far too many beers. :)

That said, these a-holes are out of control. Talk about destroying our freedoms one by one! If they ban or restrict fishing, I’m going to start fishing again, every chance I get. SCREW OBAMA AND ALL THE OVER-CONTROLLING THUGS THROUGHOUT THE TOO-NUMEROUS-TO-COUNT AGENCIES.

I only have so much time/energy, but I’m using it to sabotage & defy at every possible turn. I’m a productive, law-abiding citizen, but I’m losing patience with these ignorant Nazis.

Probably. Take anything American, anything associated with personal freedom and liberty, and it is probably on their prioritized it list somewhere. Take something associated with self-reliance like hunting, fishing, Second Amendment Rights, and those are probably high on that list. obama is an unapologetic socialist and fascist. He knows he's only going to have one term. He and his marxist leaning cohorts in crime are going to ram through as much of his socialist ideals and agenda as they can.

The crazy thing is Pelosi and Reid and a bunch of 'rats are going along with them like lemmings over the cliff. We're witnessing the en-mass political suicide of most of the Democratic party. If they weren't tearing at the very fabric of America it'd be entertaining to watch. Instead it is simply stunning. But we're coming for them, and the backlash is going to be like something they never imagined.

You're missing the point (but you're close!). That's pretty much my definition of a perfect day fishing. Note, I generally only fish at the beach, in the surf. It is an excuse to sit on a warm beach in the sun, discretely bikini watch (sunglasses), and drink beer. If I occasionally actually catch something it is actually kind of a nuisance.

I thought the "too many beers" was the whole POINT. You can buy perfectly good fish at the grocery.

Thanks for helping me understand "catch and release". I never could see the point of that.

Ha ha ha...sunglasses indeed.

“If I occasionally catch something, it is actually kind of a nuisance.” I think I understand now...you’ve got this fishing thing mastered.

My former Supervisor is a soulless and emotionless pr*ck who adores Obama. He was practically emotional the day after the election. His one pleasure in life (other than being the HR lawyer for a large institution who is charged with dropping the axe on terminations - his nickname there is “Angel of Death”)is taking two weeks each June to go deep sea fishing off of the coast of Florida. I so want to ask him how that “hopey-changey” thing is starting to work out for him.

Heh-heh.
