The AP reports that the Kansas City school system is closing 29 of its 61 schools due to budget problems -- a $50 million shortfall. The AP quotes KC Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks on the background of the story.

We would think our school unions would not be afraid of competition. Imagine charter schools where every child could read before receiving a high school diploma? We certainly don’t want that, do we, voters?
Southwest High School was in the Top 10 of High Schools in the U.S. prior to Judge Clark’s ruling. I believe under the “desegregation ruling” the built an observatory in it.
Not only was the school itself ruined by busing, but the neighborghood was as well. After busing, the neighborhood was plagued by burglaries: the Brinks home security folks prospered.
Despite millions of dollars in improvements, the school has been closed for several years now.
