NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Russia will build more than 1,000 stealth fighter jets within four decades, including at least 200 for its traditional weapons buyer India, the head of plane maker Sukhoi said on Friday.

Sukhoi test-flew its long-delayed fifth-generation fighter at the end of January, and Moscow said it would be able to compete with its U.S. F-22 Raptor rival built more than a decade ago.

Sukhoi said last week it hoped the fighter, codenamed T-50, would be ready for use in 2015.

Seriously, 1000 stealth 5th Gen jets? That's more than Raptors!

PAK FAs for Russia, FGFAs for India and PAK FAs for anyone who wants them.

The Iranians and Venezuelans are interested in this jet...

We will just have to build a drone that can beat a T-50

But luckily India will acquire its own 5th Gen fighter: The FGFA.

Why would drones be the answer to T-50 PAK FAs?

There are disadvantages to using UCAVs against manned fighters. One of them is electronic warfare (EW). Another is the disruption of communications to satellites or even their physical destruction.

The technology has not yet matured to the point where manned fighters are obsolete. It is akin to the armchair generals and defense analysts thinking the gun was no longer needed on fighter aircraft.

Instead, the warfighters would be making the decisions ODDA loop style, because they are doing the actual combat.

Well, they'd have to just to make up for attrition due to training accidents...

I know this is going to sound completely absurd but I think that it is very possible that the USA will be purchasing fighter jets from Russian in the not-to-distant future.

Why on earth would we put our pilots in a Russian jet? You have been watching the movie Firefox to much. The Russians build junk.

Huh. Pretty sarcastic. The U.S. military-industrial complex wouldn’t allow it (dollars, remember?)

A thousand planes? Given the high cost of modern stealth technology, the Russians probably at most could buy 150 planes for its own air force! And that high cost could limit the Indian Air Force buy to no more than 175-225 planes even with local Indian production.

Depending on how much they’re willing to invest in their military, I’d say roughly 100-120 (4-5 VVS fighter regiments). India would have up to 50-60 (3 fighter squadrons). Just my estimate.

Actually they are pretty clever, they had to use mechanical tricks to overcome poor materials science. When we looked at the Foxbat’s engines from the defector’s plane in Japan, they had dome interesting weight reduction solutions by using geometry to reduce mass for blades and vanes in the engines. Apply some of their geometrical solutions , with our better materials technology and voila, you have the engine in the F-22, increased thrust, less weight in the same dia tube.

We simply cannot afford Lockheed, with its high prices and arrogance. We need to get fighters from a new manufacturer.

True but lets make it work. A drone can be stealthier and turn 15-20 g’s and get behind an SU.
