The Federal Communications Commission has begun to benchmark Internet service speeds across the United States to allow consumer to compare the real world performance of their ISP with its advertised speeds.
Consumers may visit the agency's Broadband.gov Web page to run the rest from their PCs or download the FCC Broadband Test app for Android and the iPhone.

Another useless waste of government. ISPs will simply optimize routes to that site.
www.speedtest.net - to name one.
Not to mention that the FCC is collecting and storing private information about each test.
Someone at the FCC has far too much time on their hands. Just knowing how stupid and inefficient .gov is with our money, I wonder what time and expense went into the implementation of this speed testing system.
I put in bogus info, made up address 1 main street, bogus town, . Chose a zip code from some other state.
More useless bureaucrats that need to be fired. My experience is ISPs do not lie plus they always have CYA clauses. Matter of fact I was promised 12mbs by Comacast but I get 21mbps. My DSL is pathetic but is within the parameters promised
Best speed test is at speakeasy
This only makes sense if they are setting the basis for a bandwidth tax.
Sadly, we’re going to be looking at full-fledged government management of our data networks, and it’s going to cause bottlenecks and outright bans to certain sites. Mark my words!
I work in non-profit healthcare, and they’re already putting in the building blocks for government control with remote-access firewalls and switching equipment that reports SNMP traps out to external addresses—something that our security and network teams raged against but were forced to do since we RHO with Cerner in Kansas City.
Interesting times in which we live. My recommendation to fellow FReepers and friends is to get phone numbers and mailing addresses of close friends on the net. Once the government gets their tentacles into our networks, we’re going to have to go back to old-school face-to-face coffee shop and town hall meetings.
I just ran an online speed test with speakeasy
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Just scored a 32.62 Mbps downlaod and a 2.80 Mbps upload from Boston to Chicago.
Not bad, Comcast is also advertising a big jump in speeds soon.
I only want truth in advertising. What I’m tired of is the “up to” claim. What I want from a provider is a “Guaranteed no less than” - however, the goobermint has no business in it.
12 Mbps down and 2.5 Up for me and I’m on Comcast.
I have a pretty fast Comcast connection.
It might have something to do with when it was first installed we kept getting an echo effect on the phone service.
the guy had to come out 3 times.
Maybe they cranked the speed up to try to solve the problem?
Turned out the echo was not from my phone at all but from my moms new cell. :)
Here’s the new FBI software.

~snip Typically, my speeds vary throughout the day. A Speakeasy speed test returned downstream results of 3.5Mbps yesterday afternoon.I informed Time Warner about the issue...~snip
That’s an ISSUE? My wireless ISP software tells me I am getting “3.6Mbps - low”. But I have rarely seen it above that. No other choice here besides dial up which was hit and miss daily.
Whoa! we be surfin now!
I smell a giant RAT. We can only be sure of one thing. This won’t be advantageous to freedom of speech or free enterprise.
Hint: On the Internet, nobody knows if you're a dog...
I put in bogus info, made up address 1 main street, bogus town, . Chose a zip code from some other state.
