wait....if the public option is in, then this isn’t the bill passed by the Senate, which means it can’t go straight to the president’s desk. Right?

That’s how I understand it. They could have passed the senate bill verbatim, but changes have to go back to the senate. I think...

They've posted the Reconciliation bill, which by Constitutional requirement, MUST originate in the House. The House is readying to pass this Reconciliation bill which would then "deem" the original Senate bill (H.R. 3590). Once H.R. 3590 passes, it will be sent to the President for his signature.

This reconciliation bill would then need to be passed by the Senate, and then sent to the President.

They are two separate bills H.R. 3590, the original Senate bill and this Reconciliation Bill (HR number yet unknown).
