ACORN’s Maryland Chapter Shuttered

Group is undone in national scandal sparked by videos showing illegal activity

From today’s Baltimore Sun:

A former leader of Maryland’s ACORN chapter said Monday the group will no longer operate in the state, doomed by an embarrassing national scandal six months ago from which the organization never recovered.

ACORN officeAn undated sign hangs on the entrance to the ACORN offices at 16 W. 25th St. A former Maryland ACORN official said the office ceased operations late last year.  You may recognize this stoop from this golden oldie.

Sonja Merchant-Jones, former co-chairwoman of the state chapter of ACORN and a board member since 1999, said there are no plans in Maryland to rebrand under a different name, a move undertaken Monday by several ACORN affiliates across the country.

Maryland ACORN ceased operations late last year, Merchant-Jones said, and all the offices in the state have closed. The group has not held a board meeting in Maryland since November, she added.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now came under scrutiny in September, when videos recorded in Baltimore showed workers counseling two conservative activists pretending to be a pimp and prostitute. Two staff members of the Baltimore office were fired because of the video, which was broadcast on major networks throughout the country and showed the employees giving tax-evading tips to the man and a scantily dressed female partner.

The incident effectively shut down local and state offices, Merchant-Jones said, and the branches were forced to cease operations after dues-paying members fled.

Congress reacted to the video by stripping ACORN’s federal funding. Last week a federal judge upheld a ruling that a law blacklisting ACORN and groups allied with it was unconstitutional, but observers doubt ACORN will recoup any money.

Well, at least that's one piece of good news in an otherwise dismal year of fascist power-grabs and attempts to destroy the U.S. through a catastrophic debt burden.

Now, if we can just start getting rid of the feckless, reckless congress-bee-itches who keep funneling our tax money to these creeps.

“It means absolutely nothing.”

They have DEEMED to close that office...but will DEEM to reorganize elsewhere...they are cockroaches...they will keep coming back until we tent and fumigate the government socialist machine that powers them...

Correct

They simply change their name but the MO and funding remains the same... the way to kill this snake is to find it’s head and feed it to the ants

I feel very ant like these days

I’d have to check in with my more knowledgable Beckfan friends but I believe they are already going by a new name in Baltimore. This is about distraction and misdirection.

Also theres the Secretary of state project who has had a frightening degree of success (11 wins in 13 attempts). In Ohio the SOS is managing to lose signatures required to get names on ballots.

Doesn’t matter IMO. This is a ploy. We’re going to be playing whack-a-mole.

They are going to pop up under a new name and be more careful next time not to get caught.

There is too much money being fed to these people by the Dems (govt money) and stupid corporations who try to buy them off.

I know. I have a five year-old daughter, and I would with great pleasure use my bare hands to flense, square inch by square inch, anyone who trapped her into a prostitution ring. There cannot be any excuses for, or any disingenuity about, anyone who seriously tries to set up, or foster, or aid and abet, a child prostitution ring.

Beware of the new hydra monster.
The acorn monster too can grow more heads and the new heads will change name and appearance.

Worth repeating...APNews

One of the latest groups to adopt a new name is ACORN Housing, long one of the best-funded affiliates. Now, the group is calling itself the Affordable Housing Centers of America.
Others changing their names include what were among the largest affiliates: California ACORN is now Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, and New York ACORN has become New York Communities for Change. More are expected to follow suit.
