The US military is looking for help in building a robotic subterranean mole-craft, intended to deliver burrowing kamikazes strikes against underground bunker complexes and suchlike.
This news comes to us courtesy of a US government request for information, flagged up by the excellent Ares blog, in which the Defense Threat Reduction Agency - charged with reducing threats from enemy nuclear arsenals and so forth by whatever means come to hand - seeks help in building a "Robotic Underground Munition", or RUM.

Request for Information (RFI) for Robotic Underground Munitiion (RUM) Technology:
The Weapons and Capabilities Division (RD-CXW) of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is soliciting government, industry, and academia for high quality and innovative advanced technologies relevant to the development of a Robotic Underground Munition (RUM). The RUM would be a one-time use, air-delivered, highly mobile vehicle having certain characteristics similar to an unmanned ground vehicle.

Sounds like one of the sci-fi series about Ender Wiggens and his battle against the Formics AKA the Buggers, an alien insectoid race that live in tunnel-like hives.
Ender could have used a “Robotic Underground Munition”.
I get so confused. Is fantasy being shaped by reality or is reality shaped by fantasy?

So the Iranians deploy seismic monitors around their nuke sites. Then what?

Even if we had this capability don’t hold your breath that Obama would ever use it against Iran. I expect that Obama will send a congratulatory message to Iran after they explode their first nuke especially if it was targeted at Israel.

Likely, we never will acquire this capability. Enviro-nuts will insist that “one-time use” be changed to “reusable” on grounds that this “green” version will create more jobs and avert global warming.

They already make something that meets all the basic requirements. It’s called gasoline. Just like they did in WWII you keep pouring it down the hole until they come out with their hands up. If they don’t come out drop a match.
