They did some good work up there with what we'd consider relatively simple (primitive) equipment. But sometimes simpler is better (not always). Those long-duration missions on the old Mir were quite remarkable feats.

Of course, they've had their share of tragedy, as we have. Komarov's (reputed) final words in his fatal parachute malfunction accident were truly heart-rending.
