My point is that you are ignorant, repeatedly misrepresent things you don’t understand or are simply incapable of grasping, and also a flat out liar.

When you accuse people of lying, you have to specifically document that lie. Otherwise, you're making a false accusation. I seems to be a favorite tatic of yours: You call people liars without eing able to substantiate. This is called "libel" in our court system. I could sue you for it (and win) if I didn't think you were a complete jackass, and beneath my consideration.

And I’ve proven that pretty concisely in post 30. Care to rebut?

The quote you provided does say what you seem to think it does. It has been thoroughly rebutted directly to you be myself and other FReepers on other threads. Ronald Reagan's presidency adhered to many fiscally conservative principals. Reagan directly opposed the libertarian position on virtually all social issues. It also opposed conservatism on most other issues. The quote you provided is from a 1975 interview published in the leading libertarian magazine. At the time, Reagan was challenging a Republican incubant, and looking for all the votes he could get. He tries as hard as he can to say something nice about libertarianism. In the end, he concedes that there are differnces between Conservatism and Libertarianism, and the he is not a Libertarian.

Now, you know all of this, because we have been over it before. And you have been over it with other FReepers. The fact that you contine to hold out hope for this quote at the salvation on libertarianism, suggests to me that you are at best a bit delusional. Only an idiot could look at Reagan's record and conclude that the man had anything but distain for libertarianism.

So basically, you're calling Reagan a liar now, in order to save your own face in the wake of your lies.

Now, you're not only showing yourself as a liar...you're showing that you're willing to denegrate a man that you supposedly venerate in order to cover your own ass.

That's pretty much all I needed, thanks!

I have heard this spin before and it makes Reagan look like an unprincipled political prostitute who only says what he does to attrack votes. I am personla friends with the founder of the Ethan Allen Institute here in Vermont. He was a senior advisor to Reagan when he was in the WH and a speech writer for him before that. He claims was that Reagan's fidelity to libertarianism was deeper than just about any other modern president. The recognition of a connection between libertarianism and American conservatism goes well beyond Reagan. The modern conservative movement in America began as a fusion of libertarians, traditionlists and anti-communists. The fact that partisans of each of these strands of conservatism often try and excommunicate members of the other stands does not alter the fact that all three strands were part of the founding of the American conservative movement.

PS: If you read my original response, you’d realize I never said Reagan claimed he was libertarian, as you claim, along with your other falsehoods.

But he did recognize it as an ally, unlike you.

presidio9 asserts, regarding Ronald Reagan, that "He tries as hard as he can to say something nice about libertarianism."

Here's an excerpt from http://reason.com/archives/1975/07/01/inside-ronald-reagan

REASON: Governor Reagan, you have been quoted in the press as saying that you’re doing a lot of speaking now on behalf of the philosophy of conservatism and libertarianism. Is there a difference between the two?

REAGAN: If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.

Anybody who's interested in the truth of the matter should read the entire interview.

I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism.

It doesn't seem like Ronald Reagan strained very hard when he said that. In fact, he didn't remotely disagree with the REASON interviewer's statement that he was "speaking now on behalf of the philosophy of conservatism and libertarianism". If anything, Reagan is uncomfortable with having to use the "misnomer" of "conservative" because he considers himself a classical Liberal.

Does presidio9 have some inside knowledge about this interview, or is he just making an assertion from ignorance?
