ALBANY Fresh off an announcement that jolted the New York political world, Steve Levy, the Long Island Democrat who abandoned his party to run for governor as a Republican, is working to secure endorsements as he tries to gain an edge in the contest for the nomination.
His candidacy barely a day old, Mr. Levy, the Suffolk County executive, has already siphoned away the support of several influential county leaders from former Representative Rick A. Lazio, who until this week appeared to be the Republican front-runner.

we need a NO RINOS movement
Let me guess, sacrificial lamb to ensure the conservative loses?
Check out Mr. Levy’s record before commenting. He gained prominence in Suffolk County for actively cracking down on the illegal aliens and busting “safe houses.” I have conservative family members in Suffolk who support him because he’s more conservative than most of the NY Republicans, and he takes the illegal alien issue SERIOUSLY.
If illegal immigrants are allowed to vote on November 2, 2010 and beyond, then how can “U.S. conservatism” successfully survive for the long-term? Obama should of been impeached by now! Where’s the next U.S. civil war? Where’s the next actual U.S. revolution? Jeez!

Transitioning blighted houses to community groups for rehabing
Oh yes, and the liberals HATE him for cracking down on illegal aliens. They directly implicate him for creating a "culture of fear" in Suffolk County against illegals.
I've had family say he's more conservative than most NY repubs. From what I'm able to dig up on him, sounds like it.
Look, County RINOs revealing themselves.
Toss ‘em
Just looking at the picture.... GAY!
If he really is tough on illegal aliens and want to do something about those cockroaches, he can be as gay as a stack of strawberry flapjacks as far as I'm concerned.
As a result of Levy, how many illegal aliens were deported back to Mexico?
There are very few 'True Conservatives' in New York State, at least politically ... George Marlin comes to mind, but after that the list drops off dramatically ...
NYS politics is a complete disaster, on the one hand ya got the Democrats who control *everything* and are totally corrupt, and on the other hand ya got the so-called Republicans who are completely useless and inept as well as also being corrupt. Take your choice - there isn't any choice!
I gonna repost my reply from an earlier thread about this along with its FR link: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2474690/posts
Perhaps Levy is the kind of 'Democrat' more of an old-school type Dem, one who is patriotic, pragmatic, and not beholden to the modern liberal (commie?) Democrat party. I applaud his entering the GONYS race, because for far too long this State has been controlled by a cadre of self-serving politicians, Dem and Pub alike, who have ground this great State into dust for their own personal gain. Levy is a breath of fresh air in this sewer political environment.
Lazio, on the other hand, is reaching too far for the Governorship ... he should have, and absolutely WOULD have, beaten Gillibrand for the US Senate seat that he lost to Hillary so many years ago. As would Rudy if he went for that Senate seat instead of running for POTUS last year.
Such is the inept dysfunction of the NYS GOP ... total chaos ... overreaching, etc etc ...
Steve Levy is a good choice, and about as 'conservative' as yer ever gonna get in this deep blue state as a 'name' candidate who can get things done for us, the people.
Just for full disclosure, I live in Suffolk County, so Mr Levy is my County Executive ... and he's done a good job of it, even though I didn't vote for him

And you would be driving a stake into the heart of conservatism.
Exactly. My gut feeling is that it's all window dressing.
You don't know if the guy is gay. Why wring your hands over something that may not even exist? Why do people do that?
Lighten up, Francis.
Point taken. But it’s more than his questionable mannerisms. It’s more that he’s a converting Democrat. What’s the motivation - especially considering that the Democratic label is taking a real beating in the polls lately?
But if he is tough on 'em, more power to him.
If he's just a slimebag who converted from the 'RAT side to screw up the election, though, may he be infested by the sand fleas of a thousand camels.
Definitely a mark in his favor!
