Capt. Tejdeep Singh Rattan was no different except that he wore a full beard and black turban, the first Sikh in a generation allowed to complete U.S. Army basic officer training without sacrificing the articles of his faith. He completed the nine-week training Monday after Army officials made an exemption to a policy that has effectively prevented Sikhs from enlisting since 1984.
"I'm feeling very humbled. I'm a soldier," said the 31-year-old dentist, smiling after the ceremony at Fort Sam Houston. "This has been my dream."

While I admire the Sikhs, I would prefer that military tradition be upheld. There is a reason for conformity in the armed services and it is not a detriment to your faith unless you allow it.
Agreed. The Sikhs are warriors. But I recall the first morning of basic training that now seems a hundred years ago. You will shave this AM. Even if you have never shaved a single time in your life, you will shave this morning. The Army probably needs officers that wont subvert allegiance to the military ideal to religious costumes.
I agree that the Sikhs are traditionally fearsome warriors.
However, if he’s a fearsome warrior then he would be a fearsome warrior in a standard US military uniform.
This just shows how well and truly our military has succumbed to political correctness.
Wait until he has to take part in NBC training. That protective mask won't be of much use with a beard preventing a good seal.
