WASHINGTON, D.C., March 23, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards has issued a statement declaring victory after the Senate health care bill's passage Sunday, noting that the abortion-related executive order Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) agreed to in exchange for pro-life Democrats' votes was merely a "symbolic gesture."
Stupak had argued after the vote that, contrary to the affirmations of virtually every top pro-life organization in the U.S., Obama's promised executive order "is worth more than the paper it is written on."
"The only option you had was leave the Senate language or strengthen it to prevent abortions under an executive order - that's what we did, we stayed true to those principles - or vote no," the Michigan Democrat told FOX News. "So you kill the bill and we do not have health care ... I've always said I want to see health care for the nation.''
Yet according to Planned Parenthood - in an assessment not unlike those of the National Right to Life Committee and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops - the executive order would do little to hinder the "abortion industry bailout" embedded in the legislation.
For more than a year, Planned Parenthood has worked tirelessly for a health care reform bill that would fix our broken health care system, strengthen womens health, and achieve quality, affordable health care for all Americans," Richards said in a statement Sunday.
"Today, monumental progress was made toward achieving these goals with the passage of historic health care reform legislation by the U.S. House of Representatives," she said, "despite a symbolic gesture, in the form of an Executive Order, to anti-choice Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI), which has diverted attention from the central goal of health care reform controlling costs and extending coverage."
Richards also pointed out that the legislation will "significantly increase access to reproductive health care."
Nonetheless," she continued, "we regret that a pro-choice president of a pro-choice nation was forced to sign an Executive Order that further codifies the proposed anti-choice language in the health care reform bill, originally proposed by Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska."
"What the presidents executive order did not do is include the complete and total ban on private health insurance coverage for abortion that Congressman Bart Stupak (DMI) had insisted upon," said Richards. "So while we regret that this proposed Executive Order has given the imprimatur of the president to Senator Nelsons language, it is critically important to note that it does not include the Stupak abortion ban."
Ping!
So then why doesnt any CONSERVATIVE GROUP PLAY THE GAME....EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW IT IS SMOKE AND MIRRORS...CLAIM A VICTORY FOR THE PRO LIFE AGENDA...WITH THE EXECUTIVE ORDER AND HAVE STUPAK AND THE REST.. STAND AND MAKE THE PRESIDENT STAND WITH THE GROUP? CLAIM A VICTORY FOR THE LIVES OF BABIES AND MAKE A BIG SHOW.....PLAY THEIR STINKEN GAME.
In other words, the joke is on us. It didn’t take long for “Planned Killerhood” to drop the pretense!
Planned Parenthood—”Hurrah, we can keep killing babies!”
a DEEMOCRAT has a right to choose symbolic murder and call it a choice as guaranteed in the symbolic constitution
Why are these people so proud of their baby-killing ways? Have they no shame? It’s one thing to “save” the mother, but another entirely to promote abortion.
The GOP has been branded the Party of No. Vote NO on all of Obama’s legislation. On all of his nominations. Shut the government down.
The Democrats have already violated the separation of powers and the Constitutional manner in which legislation is to be passed and signed.
This is a sham, not our Constitutional government. Shut it down until the next Congress is seated.
They dont believe it is a baby.
They dont think like we do...they have no shame...because their God is themselves. They are not conservative...they are not mommies that want to teach their young that it is good for mommies to stay home and love their husbands...submit to the Lord....they are the head of their home and body......plain and simple...Abortion means liberation....I CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR ME.....
HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE COMMERCIAL...WHO SAYS I HAVE TO HAVE A PERIOD EVERY MONTH? If i dont want to....WHO SAYS?
It's all about the $$$
PPFA's income for fiscal year 2006-2007 was $1.018 billion (up 11 percent from 2005-2006), with nearly one-third coming from taxpayers. This "not-for-profit" entity ends virtually every fiscal year with tens of millions of dollars in "excess revenue over expenses" (known to most people as "profit"). The "excess" for 2006-2007 alone was $114.8 million.
On June 30, 2006, PPFA had net assets valued at $951.8 million, of which $383.1 million was unrestricted (essentially a savings account) and $160 million was temporarily restricted. Despite these huge sums, PPFA incessantly claims to need more taxpayer dollars.
I think it was Jim Quinn who said that.
I’m convinced Stupak isn’t even prolife. I don’t think he cares that it was a trick. I think he’s even somewhat pleased.
Go and pray in front of a Planned Parenthood Clinic — many have shut down because of the prayers being said outside their doors.
