Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White entered the State Board of Education controversy Tuesday, saying experts should review some 100 changes made by the GOP majority.
History professors and social science teachers proposed new curriculum standards for Texas public schools. The board changes, many of them controversial, came from on overly political process, White says.
"Individual school board members are no doubt sincere in their beliefs, and some of the changes can be debated by reasonable people. But, under the leadership of another extreme Rick Perry appointee, the amendment process injected politics into our school books and classrooms," said Bill White. "That is a step in the wrong direction, requiring leadership from our governor."
"Rick Perry must ask his appointed chair to send the curriculum standards back to review teams before final adoption in May," White said.
In response, Perry campaign spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said: "It is clear that Bill White has no understanding of this process as SBOE members are independently elected by the people of Texas. The curriculum standards process is the same as it has been in the past, and Gov. Perry is confident that it is effective and adequate."

“Controversial”....like teaching that we live in a constitutional republic and not a democratic republic?
LMAO. What an idiot. Not to mention the fact that Bill White screwed over the city before he left.
And as qualified to comment on textbook selection as he is to comment on Rugby play, unless I miss my guess.
You stupid people cannot be allowed to contradict the dogma of your intellectual superiors. The gall, the heresy, the horror.
Shut up White you miserable BOOB.
Bill White is a ....
They can’t have it.
If he feels that way, he should run for school board, and let people decide on his merits...but it doesn’t matter anyway, Obama basically handed Perry re-election, as much as I HATE Perry.
White wants to take the power away from the people elected by the citizens of Texas to make these decisions and give that power to a pack of classroom bureaucrats.
Yeah, thats just what the citizens voted for.
Is this guy on crack?
Of course this wouldnt be an issue if we didnt have a socialized school industry. If we returned to a capitalist school industry the market would take care of this. Government schools have no place in a free society.
How did he screw it over?
He doesn’t understand state government. He’s just biding his time until he can run for Senate fully in 2012.
It's about controlling thought. And since 1968 it's only gotten worse.
This is by design. Bill Ayers went from bomb throwing radical in 1968 to government paid educrat.
Lib White is under investigation for tax evasion. LOL
Perry just filed a complaint against him.
You made my day with that news! I haven’t heard anything about it, but can’t wait to find out about the delicious details!
From the memory hole...
Tax Break for the Rich; Roger Clemens at the Capitol; Green Sex(Mayor White gets help from the appraisal district By Richard Connelly - Houston Press Thursday, Feb 21 2008)
Houston accountant Tim Hebert is pissed about his property taxes. So he decided to do a little research at the Harris County Appraisal District Web site. And there he learned that in 2007, while his taxes were going up, Mayor Bill White's Memorial-area home had gotten a huge tax break, with the assessment falling from about $2.8 million to about $1.8 million.
White's neighbors hadn't gotten the same break, just the mayor.
HCAD told Hebert the change came because new maps placed White's home in a floodplain, but that didn't make much sense only his house was in the new floodplain? Hebert showed that other houses should have been affected by the new map as well.
"I don't have any personal beef with the Mayor," Hebert says, "but I hate the fact that the rest of us are getting slammed with ever-higher property taxes while His Honor gets a reduction of damn near $1,000,000."
Jason Cunningham, HCAD's residential property director, says, essentially, mistakes were made. Both in telling Hebert the reduction was because of a floodplain map, and in assessing White's house so high in the first place.
White, he says, has simply been the victim of "extreme overvaluing for years."
...Even Hebert's figures show that none of the other homes on White's street were valued at more than $2 million.
Cunningham says White had nothing to do with the change. Mayoral spokesman Frank Michel says the same.
"It's not like he requested it," Michel says. "He didn't know it happened until someone asked us about it."
AUSTIN The Republican Party of Texas filed a formal ethics complaint against Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White on Tuesday, accusing him of failing to report $83,000 of income to the Texas Ethics Commission.
