About those fines – Citizens who don’t purchase insurance would be subject to a fine of $325 in 2015 and $695 in 2016. Individuals may be subject to a charge equal to as much as 2.5 percent of their income in 2016.

So why buy insurance?

I pay about 10K a year for insurance. A lot of self employed people pay the same or more. If pre-existing conditions are no longer a problem why get insurance. I'll pay the $2,500-5,000 fine save $7,500-5,000 and pay for visits myself. When I do have a major illness I'll go get a policy.

Of course if I and thousands like me do this the insurance companies will go out of business, but what loyalty do I owe them. They supported this govt takeover.

That would be a capital gain.

Also, don't forget capital gains taxes go up in 2011 when the Bush tax cuts expire. I'm not sure what the rate will be then.

When my insurance went over $900 a month, I dropped it and considered myself self-insured. I have saved $30,000 in the last three years by doing so.

Thanks for the post and pointing out the new 4% real estate sales tax - I've not read of that anywhere. Nice formatting but there's no hint that this is an excerpt so it looks like the info on the RE tax is from a separate source. Did you just miss that line?

Even when excerpting is not required I like to at least see a [Snip] so I know I need to see the source to pick up missing info ... < /rant> ... ;-)

I believe children can not be denied coverage in 2011. Once I'm sure that's the law I'll drop them from coverage. I believe pre-existing conditions for adults are dropped in 2014. I see no reason to pay for insurance after that.
