Democrats May Go After McKenna's Budget
Seattle Times ^ | 24 March 2010 | Jim Brunner

Democrats in the state Legislature are considering a budget maneuver to block Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna's involvement in a lawsuit challenging the health-care bill signed by President Obama Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, confirmed that Democrats are investigating the legality of a budget proviso which would prohibit McKenna's office from spending public money on the lawsuit.

"We are looking at that," Brown said. "We're researching it right now, but there is no decision yet."

Brown also sent a letter to McKenna urging him to reconsider his position, which she called "far outside the mainstream interests" of the state.

I'm told that similar discussions are underway in the state House. Both chambers are controlled by large Democratic majorities.

McKenna's involvement in the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Florida by 13 state attorneys general, has infuriated Democrats who say he doesn't represent the state in the lawsuit.

On Tuesday afternoon, the state Democratic Party filed a public-disclosure request for all documents related to McKenna's decision to participate in the lawsuit.

I should point out that I predicted this two days ago. It was inevitable.

If there is no merit, why not let it happen?
This leads me to believe that there is something in these suits that merits trying to block them. I hope they keep up the fight.

It ends with your abject submission.

Too many did too little for way too long, and this is the result.

America -- a great idea, didn't last.

Is there recourse in WA state to recall the gov? De-funding the AG office can't be considered in the best interests of the state.

This is the method a coming Republican majority needs to use to de-fund Obamacare!

Cut the nuts off the bureaucracies that run this crap until it can be COMPLETELY repealed.

Does a state’s Attorney General...an elected official...need to take orders from the state’s Legislature (or Governor, for that matter) regarding how his/her department’s $$$ is spent? I’m not a lawyer or a politician but I wouldn’t think that’s legal.

You know these people.

True enough. In my days of working the legislature on passenger and freight rail issues, I broke bread with legislators of both parties.

This is similar to the stolen election in 2004. Bipartisanship and friendships in the legislature go by the boards when one party is defending its leader to the death.

No. In Washington, malfeasance must be proven first before a recall effort can begin. An indictment or conviction would be necessary. It's not like California, where recall is based on popularity.
