PHOENIX -- The Arizona Republican Party is considering closing their primary elections to independent voters.

The party committee directed the state party chairman in January to explore the costs and legal options for making the move.

"Some folks in the party think the best way to ensure the Republican brand means something is to ensure that only Republicans are voting in our primary," said Lee Miller, an attorney for the state GOP.

In Arizona, independent voters can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary.

If the Republican primary is closed, it could hurt Sen. John McCain who is renowned for his appeal to independent voters.

If people want to vote in a primary they are free to join the party. Open primaries make absolutely no sense.

Please. All primaries should be closed. It is the Party representative that is being selected. (Not the opponent that can be most easily defeated.)

Open primaries gave us McCain.

they should in all states, I see no reason why those who are not republican should be voting in a republican primary.

If we had these rules in the first place we would not have had Mccain

This is good news. Primaries aren’t a marked improvement over the days when candidates were picked in smoke-filled rooms. And open primaries make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I’m glad to see universal approval for this (at least here).

It makes no sense to have non-party members choose the candidate for a party (true for both the Dems and GOP).

Sounds like something a democrat would do. Like I said, we’d better be prepared that if the republicans do take back both houses what will we do if they’re the same old “specters” and “mcCains” and “Grahams” and “snows”?

I know it seems to be a quaint idea these days, but doesn’t it make sense to limit the selection process to in-party voters?

If it doesn’t, then why not let independents on the Republican ballot? That makes about the same amount of sense.

This same nonsense gave us John MeCain as the Republican nominee in 2008.

They need to this ASAP. Independents are how we ended up with “the one”. They could very well end up keeping McAmnesty on the ballot and keeping J.D. off.

I wonder if this move is being made because the Independents may actually vote for JD instead of McAmnesty....note that many Tea Party people are independent......funny that NOW the AZ GOP wants to limit independent voters....

The reality is that the GOP remains liberal...and is supporting McCain over JD. If the GOP was real conservative....JD would be getting all the support.

YES!!! Every state ought to do the same thing. Independents who are conservatives need to take stock and judge for themselves in each state whether they want a Conservative Republican or a pubbie in name only. Now is the time.

The Primaries are open for a reason: The state is paying to operate the election, and that runs into some big bucks. Indies want to vote in them because they’re paying for them.

I say, let the parties pay and then they can close the doors. Take Ceasar’s money, play Ceasar’s rules.

(Not the opponent that can be most easily defeated.)

That's why I registered as a Democrat when I first came here 10 years ago. Just re-registered as a Pubbie to vote against McCain.

This is a valid rule - we got McCain because of those damned Independents and Dem crossovers who voted for one "deemed" the most easily defeated.

I have to agree with this. One of the reasons we were stuck with McCain in 2008 was because of open primaries.
