Gov. Bob McDonnell signs Virginia Health Care Freedom Act

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell (R) signed Virginia’s opposition to the Democratically led federal health care reform bill Wednesday afternoon.

The governor put his signature on the Virginia Health Care Freedom Act at a ceremony in Richmond. State Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, State Senators Steve Martin, Fred Quayle, Jill Vogel, Delegate Bob Marshall, and Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Dr. Bill Hazel all took part in the event.

“We all agree that we must expand access to quality health care and reduce costs for all Virginians. However, that should not be accomplished through an unprecedented federal mandate on individuals that we believe violates the U.S. Constitution. The Virginia Healthcare Freedom Act sets as the policy of the Commonwealth that no individual, with several specific exceptions, can be required to purchase health insurance coverage. The Act was passed with bipartisan support, in sharp contrast to the narrow straight line partisan vote that enacted the federal health care bill on Sunday night. Virginia’s Healthcare Freedom Act received the votes of leading Democratic Senators, as well as the Democratic House Minority Leader. It was an important step to sign this bipartisan legislation today,” McDonnell said in a news release.

“The states have long been leaders in identifying and implementing innovative policies to expand access to, and improve the affordability of, healthcare coverage. Virginia will continue to play that important role. We will do this through promoting incentives for the purchase of long term care and individual medical savings accounts, focusing on preventative health and combating obesity, studying our medical delivery systems with the objective of reforming them to work better for our citizens, expanding free clinics and aggressively finding new ways to reduce the cost of our Medicaid system, which has already grown 1600% in the past 25 years. There are fiscally responsible ways by which we can reform healthcare and expand quality coverage that do not involve the forcing of unfunded and unprecedented mandates onto individuals and states, and the unsustainable growing of our national debt,” the Governor added.

Cuccinelli said, “Virginians spoke loudly and clearly in rallies, in town halls, and at the ballot box about their opposition to the new federal health care law. The governor and both Democrats and Republicans in the General Assembly heard them, and as a result, the Virginia Health Care Freedom Act is being signed today.”

Defunding the bill does not however remove the usurption of power the feds will take through its enactments.

As with the 18th Amendment and its repeal with the 21th, we still live to this day with not only organized crime but powers given to the FBI and Justice Department that directly came from enforcing prohibition, not to mention the ATF.

We can defund but without full repeal we are still faced with the Government having these powers which can easily be pulled out the next time the country looses its mind and elects the Dems into power.

The lying sack of slime O’Malley alleges that Obamacare will save Maryland $2 billion, doncha know. It’s gonna cost every other state billions but for some reason it’s gonna save money for us in Md. And more than half the idiots will believe him. These people have to be the dumbest people alive.

For clarity, you mean a massive revolt AGAINST big gubmint?

I think mass disobedience is one of the tools that will have to be used. There may be consequences, fine. For me, better than living with repression.

The states shouldn't have to push back. They own the place. The Federal government is our servant, not our master. We need governors who are leaders and who are willing to organize to reign in Federal power. Unfortunately, there are few American state governors with the IQ necessary to pul this off. Just look at some of these stooges...

I got to see Gov McDonnell last week as a guest in Larry Sabato’s intro to politics class and was truly impressed. This man has a gift for explaining the conservative viewpoint and is very engaging. The students asked poignant questions ranging from restrictions on gun purchases to offshore oil exploration and I think he hit most of these questions out of the park. His answers ranged from humor to intellectual argument and I felt like he was really connecting with the students. Sabato said McDonnell had the best sense of humor of any of the previous 11 govs he has hosted and the interaction between Sabato and McDonnell was very entertaining. I believe McDonnell definitely has what it takes to go to the national level if he decides to try.

Well, and just think. The IRS is going to say to a citizen of Virginia that they owe them money. The citizen will say no they don’t because of state law. Now if the corrupt courts then go and rule in favor of the feds, and the State backs down or does not protect...then MR citizen is stuck with the bill...Plus whatever penalties.
I am totally on Virgina’s side. I wish I knew how far they were willing to go(National Guard?) in order to keep the feds at bay.

A public stripping, and riding them out of town on a rail, might also be a good approach.
