Vatican Denies Cover-Up In U.S. Sex Abuse Case New York Times reports future pope failed to defrock troubled priest

Breaking news

VATICAN CITY - There was no cover-up in the church's handling of the case of an American priest accused of molesting 200 deaf boys, the Vatican said Thursday, denouncing what it called attempts to smear Pope Benedict XVI and involve him in the scandal.

L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, said there was a "clear and despicable intention" to strike at the pope "at any cost" with recent revelations of how the Vatican handled clerical abuse.

According to church and Vatican documents, the Vatican ordered a stop to a church trial of the accused priest, the Rev. Lawrence Murphy, after the priest wrote a letter to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger — now Pope Benedict.

American bishops had warned the future pope that failing to act could embarrass the church, the New York Times reported.

Also on Thursday, a leading cardinal told reporters that the scandal was "a conspiracy" against the church.

"This is a pretext for attacking the church," Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins said. "There is a well-organized plan with a very clear aim," he said, without spelling out who was behind it.

Saraiva Martins said that while he was in favor of zero tolerance now, he could understand why some bishops covered up cases of child abuse in the past.

"We should not be too

Yes, evil is using this to attack the church...but there have been some pretty evil people inside the church doing some pretty evil thngs as well.

Remove them
Convict them
Keep them away from kids

THEN worry about forgiving them.

They are liars.

Page 15 of the Slimes article goes on to say that there was a criminal investigation that found no evidence. The molestation was alleged to have happened in the 70’s. The letters were written in the 90’s. The Vatican went by the criminal investigation findings and just let him die.

Gee, let's see. The pro-homosexual media is attacking the Catholic Church which is in the process of expelling homosexuals from the priesthood.

Is there anyone out there who still doesn't get this?

Still waiting for the heads of Planned Parenthood to be called to answer for the willful supression of reports to authorities when young girls are molested and/or rape.

Did you not think they would come after the Catholic Church? They are after the Pope because he will stand in their way for total and complete subjugation of the masses of infidels by islam. We are at war with them, even though the President is their friend and pretending not to be.

They are liars.

You have provided no evidence for your false witness, with your document, for the particular case being discussed in the article.

Therefore, the only reasonable judgment that can be ascertained is that you are the liar.

From the article:

According to the documentation, in July 1996, then-Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland sent a letter seeking advice on how to proceed with Murphy to Ratzinger, who led the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1981 until 2005, when he was elected pope.

Total B.S. EVERYTHING wrong since the 1960's in the Diocese of Milwaukee, WI can be placed at the feet of Rembert G. Weakland:

Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee, the most liberal bishop in America, has been disgraced by the revelation that he paid $450,000 in hush money to buy the silence of an apparent former male lover.

Do bishops generally go against the edicts of the Vatican?

If Roman Catholic apologists would spend one tenth of the time ridding their church of pedophiles as they do in defending the indefensible the world would be a better place.

I would guess that disobedience in any religious organization would considered a biggie thingy.

Did you read in the article that the offending priest was sexually molesting male youth in the confessional? Just imagining that makes me ill to my stomach.

You're kidding, right?

Crimen had to do with soliciting for sex in the confessional, not with abuse of kids. It doesn't even apply here.
