Why do we at Big Hollywood and elsewhere in the conservative blogosphere even care about James Cameron and his stupid eco-dreck cartoon? Or about Tom Hanks’ insights into the nature of American-Japanese relations World War II? Or about the conclusions Matt Damon has drawn about the Iraq war that he’s derived as a result of his years of intense work at being a movie star?
Well, at one level, we don’t care. James Cameron is another overpaid Hollywood petty tyrant with twin talents for shooting exciting action set pieces and for overtly and covertly serving up sophomoric lefty clichés. Tom Hanks seems to be a nice enough guy, but I’d as soon head to him to diagnose a mysterious groin lump as I would to get a dissertation on the racial undertones of the War in the Pacific. And Matt Damon is just a half-wit whose advocacy of gravity would be enough to make me oppose it.
But on another level, we do care because these folks and their antics provide proverbial “teaching moments” that help define the nature of the opposing sides in this cultural insurrection. And it is an insurrection – in the case of Big Hollywood, a war between wily guerrillas with laptops, a few affiliated websites, a radio show and some busy Twitter accounts, and that unwieldy, lumbering cultural behemoth we call Hollywood.

We care because they have influence and sway opinion of the uninformed. Ignore them at our peril. We ignored the 60s radicals and now we have Obama.
When Hanks appeared as himself on the Celebrity Jeopardy sketch on SNL, he wasn’t acting.

It is propaganda and it works.
Propaganda, the coordinated attempt to influence public opinion through the use of media. It is the instrument for acquiring and maintaining power and for the implementation of policies.
My mom considers me a bit paranoid but I think it started with Middle America’s acceptance of folks like Oprah. She seemed to raise victimhood to near-sainthood in my mind and all those ditzy dames throughout the US went along and made her rich beyond her wildest dreams.
Although not a child movie “Team America” explains hollywood to a tee.
People saw Avatar and were more impressed by the medium (3D, CGI) than by the lame message. Did they absorb Cameron's "thought" that way or do they just consider it an excuse for the special effects?
People will watch The Pacific. Is what they'll take away from it what Hanks said about the war or is it what they got from Band of Brothers -- patriotism and nostalgia?
Sure, these guys are creeps. Boycott them if you want to, but it's not "war," just more of the entertainment industry doing what it always does.
I've watched the first 2 installments of "Pacific" and I'm not in awe of it the way I was with "Band of Brothers." I just think that the sub-plots are too compartmentalized and lack a common story thread, and that makes it more challenging for the viewer.
That said, the battle scenes have graphically displayed Japanese atrocities along with the reluctance of US Marines to take prisoners. So while I think Tom Hanks is all wet with his emphasis on racial animosity, I think that the story does not suffer from it. If Tom would just shut his mouth & quit displaying his 21st Century sensibilities I might be able to enjoy "The Pacific" a tiny bit more.
It certainly didn’t start with Oprah, but she’s no doubt part of it. The commie left and their useless idiot dupes, the Liberals, have been undermining our culture for a very long time. Think back to the 60s when the drug-crazed hippie, so-called “anti-war” (actually pro-communist) movement got underway. Most were used as naive pawns of the commie left who organized the protests. Same thing goes on today.
I have watched part of one episode of The Pacific just to find out if a coworker’s interpretation of one scene was accurate - she stated that several soldiers onboard a ship before the Guadal Canal invasion were talking about not knowing why they were fighting the Japanese. I guess the idea was to depict U.S. soldiers as not believing in the mission in the Pacific. I’m not sure I’d agree with the woman’s interpretation - but who knows for sure.
I won’t watch any more episodes of The Pacific since Hanks came out with his racial comments regarding WWII. In my view he has urinated on the graves of all the U.S. soldiers who died in WWII, and all those who survived (not to mention those who died or were wounded on Dec 7, 1941). If these people would perform their art and keep their mouths shut they’d make a lot more money.
Long ago I came to the conclusion that Hollywood just can't help it.
