NEW YORK, March 29 (UPI) -- Members of a New York family charged with stockpiling 30 guns and other weapons are antique collectors, not criminals, a friend says.
Thomas Siano, 57, Kathleen Siano, 58, and their son, Vincent Siano, 29, were charged with criminal possession of weapons.
Michael Poole, 29, their friend and tenant, also was charged after a Friday search of the Siano home turned up 30 guns, seven knives and two crossbows, but the charges against him were dropped, the New York Daily News reported Monday.
The weapons were left to Thomas Siano by his grandfather and uncle and are antiques the family never used, Poole said.
"They were heirlooms. He put them up in the attic because he didn't know what else to do with them. He never brought them out. He didn't want anyone to get hurt."
Poole and other tenants also said pills discovered by police, including Prozac, Xanax and Paxil, were legally obtained.

Nice guns. Good that the charges were dropped. I should get a crossbow.

“Among the 30 guns seized were Winchester and Marlin rifles that looked like relics of the Old West; two assault rifles; shotguns, some made by Mossberg and Remington; and Colt, Smith & Wesson and Brescia pistols in a variety of sizes, from .22 caliber to .45 caliber.
In addition to the umbrella-knife, a sword, a machete, three daggers and a hunting knife were confiscated. The officers also found a large quantity of ammunition and materials to make homemade ammunition, the police said.
It was unclear what triggered the investigation, which originated in the 61st Precinct.”

If that’s a Colt Lightning or Thunder model it’s worth some serious cash. Too bad he’ll never get them back.
Once again the police show their respect for the second amendment. About time for the jackboot lickers to come out with "They were just doing thier jobs."
Outrageous that a man would have his personal property confiscated by the government.
Isn't it wonderful how the charges were dropped but the police keep the guns?
I believe the worst threst to freedom is some busybody or silly family member worrying about your guns and calling the police.
What they don't know about,they can't report.
When will Bloomberg take credit for making New York safer by stealing this man's guns?
It says that charges were dropped against their friend who was living in the house. He probably said he didn’t know anything about the guns. It doesn’t say that charges were dropped against the family.
These are obviously collector’s items. And since they belonged to his grandfather and uncle and were left to him, it’s hard to fault him for not selling or disposing of them even though he evidently had no interest in them himself.
Someone in the family must have spoken incautiously to a “friend,” and got ratted on to the police. A pity.
What were the original charges against these people? It can’t be for possessing 30 firearms.
I don’t understand why the house was searched, or why the guns were confiscated, or why this man’s owning a few guns would even be news. This is plain stupidity on the part of police and media.
I am trying to find the number in our Constitution but am having trouble finding it.
Also, what exactly is a “Assault Weapon?’ Since this term was made up by the press decades ago and is now being used by nearly everyone. I have seen some descriptions so stupid as to include a few of my hunting rifles that are nowhere near being “Assault Weapons.”
Michael Poole, 29, their friend and tenant, also was charged after a Friday search of the Siano home turned up 30 guns, seven knives and two crossbows, but the charges against him were dropped, the New York Daily News reported Monday.
This tells me the charges were dropped on the friend and tenant, not on the owners.
What is the legal definition of "stockpile"? More than 1?
Kind of the way Broward county Sheriff's deupties take cash. One of their spokespersons solemly stated several years ago that they take cash because $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 dollar bills are those favored by drug dealers.
at least one...
What difference does it make whether they were collectors’ items or not? Does the Constitution limit the number of firearms a citizen can own?
I don’t understand this. It says they were “legally obtained.”
With healthcare passed, there will be no stopping him and his acolytes
Not at all. They're "sending a message" that you don't have any rights in NY.
