BALIMORE, MARYLAND - Lawyers for the father of a Marine who died in Iraq say a court has ordered him to pay legal costs for the anti-gay protesters who picketed his son's funeral.
The protesters are led by Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church. Albert Snyder of York, Pa., had won a $5 million verdict against Phelps, but it was thrown out on appeal.
On Friday, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in
Maryland ordered Snyder to pay the costs of Phelps' appeal.
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to consider whether the protesters' provocative messages, which include phrases like "Thank God for dead soldiers," are protected by the First Amendment.

Lawyers say Snyder already is struggling to come up with the fees associated with filing the brief with the high court.

HORRIBLE. Somebody needs to take that whole Phelps crew out of the picture permanently. Ship 'em to Timbuktu on a one-way ticket. On a leaky boat.
I can think of remedies that are closer to home and faster too, but that's not for posting...

It'd be a real shame of something happened to the Phelps clan which precluded them from suing anyone ever again.

Since when do we have loser pays?
I thought that it occurred very rarely in some frivolous cases, but he won the first time, so it’s difficult to argue it’s frivolous.

But I’m sure saying “thank God for dead judges,” or “dead lawyers” would be considered hate speech.

So Mr. Snyder, the injured party, has to pay the legal expenses for the person who injured him??? This is monstrous!! Can this be appealed? If it can’t, I would pay Phelps 1 cent/month. “Sorry, Judge, that’s the best I can do, since I had to bury my son and pay for my own legal expenses.”

I will see your $100.00, and raise you $125.00.If anyone finds a legitimate PayPal site for this father, please post it. I know plenty of fellow Patriot Guard Riders in the Katy-Houston area who will kick-in.
