Response to rancher's death sparks McCain, Hayworth brawl
The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, Ariz. ^ | 2010-03-31 | Rhonda Bodfield

U.S. Sen. John McCain is blasting his challenger J.D. Hayworth, saying he’s mischaracterized his record to score political points in the wake of the murder of a Douglas rancher over the weekend.

Former Congressman Hayworth is blasting back, meanwhile, saying McCain’s record on immigration is out of step with what Arizona wants.

Speaking on a Phoenix broadcast station about the case of Robert Krentz, who was believed to have been shot and killed by an illegal immigrant, Hayworth said he has long advocated for a military presence on the border while McCain worked on an “amnesty bill” with former U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy.

“I’m heartened to hear that as of yesterday, Senator McCain has decided that gee, there could be a military presence on the border. The tragedy is, it’s too late for the Krentz family and the problems continue unabated,” Hayworth said in the interview.

“The fact is we need a clear, consistent conservative in the U.S. Senate who is not a johnny-come-lately to border security, but who has advocated for it and will get the job done. It is time to end this madness.”

McCain’s campaign spokesman Brian Rogers sent out a release calling Hayworth’s comments “despicable and offensive.”

Aside from the fact Hayworth has the facts wrong since McCain has sought troops on the border for more than a year, Rogers said, “More troubling is that he’s trying to lay the blame for this murder on Sen. McCain. It’s beyond the pale.”

Press releases from last March quote McCain saying he supports sending National Guard troops.

Also, in opening comments at a field hearing in Phoenix last April to focus attention on border crime, McCain reiterated the call for the Guard to go to the border to counteract violence associated with illegal drug traffic.

Rogers noted that Hayworth knew better, given that Hayworth’s own talk radio show played footage of McCain telling news outlets in Phoenix that more resources were needed to secure the border.

Rogers said the comments “demonstrate a candidate so consumed by political ambition that he'll say anything to anyone — no matter how shameful or inaccurate.”

Asked to respond to Rogers’ characterization, Hayworth, who was en route to a town hall in Douglas in the wake of the murder, stood by his comments, saying McCain didn’t highlight the need for a military presence “with any action” or “prominence” until Krentz’ death.

He said the McCain campaign can quibble with the dates, “but there is one fact that is beyond debate, and that is that Sen. McCain heretofore has been an unabashed advocate for amnesty. He may want to call it comprehensive immigration reform, but Arizonans aren’t fooled.”

Shucks, the "war hero" has even gone to the border himself to protect "God's children"! That way, they can do the jobs Americans just don't do, and we can all avoid the fate of having $50 heads of lettuce.

McCain is a despicable and offensive man...and a RINO traitor to boot!

It's long past time for him to GTFO the Senate.

REMEMBER THE POWS AND MIAS!

REMEMBER ROBERT KRENTZ!

May God save the Republic!

Hayworth is 100% correct.....and McCain is a total LIAR. McCain has done everything to keep the border open and the illegal aliens and drug dealers to come right through.

Great to see JD going after McCain on the Krentz tragedy. McCain has blood on his hands....and he knows it. Especially when Krentz’s wife wrote a letter to DHS back in 2007 about the un-secure border....while McCain was pushing Amnesty.

I guess Sarah Palin did not help, huh, John McCain....

Doesn't matter where McCain stood over the last year, he engaged in the effort to get amnesty to 30 million illegal aliens and all that did was attract more of them.

I'm afraid on this that McCain's best course of action is to drop out of the campaign and hope people forget his involvement in this man's death.

If it were up to McLame, we’d have zillions of armed Mexicans and thousands of al Qaeda stampeding across the border into the USA.

McCain twisted the actual dialogue in order to avoid discussing his lack of action regarding border regulation. That is kinda creepy and very liberal like. I hate to read about a genuine hero acting so smucky.

McCain was pushing Amnesty (for votes)

Now he’s calling on troops on the border (for votes)

I’m glad I donated to J.D. Hayworth.

He actually said this just a few days ago:

“President Reagan granted amnesty to two million people and that was wrong,” McCain said.

How does ANYONE support this man?

Sorry, Hayworth is right. This is on McCain’s hands. Every death by illegals in that state. Every drunk illegal wiping out Americans in their cars or on the street. Gang attacks across the border. Ranchers being killed by drug traffickers and violent illegals breaking into homes along the way.

McCain wants amnesty. Would’ve had it without extreme pressure from his own party. He never said he no longer wanted it, he just said he’d build a g-d fence first.

If McCain wanted troops, he could ask the governor to deploy arizona reserves to the border. He could make it very uncomfortable for state legislators if he wanted to make it an issue. He won’t because he thinks this gets him enough Hispanic votes to win. RINOs never learn that they don’t get those votes, not when they can simply vote for the “real thing” (democrats).

Actions have consequences, Mr. McCain.

We have borders for a reason, apparently one that you do not understand.

If it’s true that McCain has called for stronger border security for the past year, doesn’t it speak to the fact that’s he’s incompetent and useless as a United States Senator? Why re-elect him and send him back to Washington if he has no pull or ability to get the border secured in his state. Or, more likely, he just pays lip service to these things and does NOTHING to make them happen.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Good grief, get rid of this McManiac, Arizona!!!! This SOB will stoop to anything! He fought putting the troops on the border when Bush did it.

There is where McManiac has the advantage. the ‘public’ doesn’t have a clue this has happened. Have you seen it on TV? Limbaugh and Hannity haven’t even talked about it that I can find.
