WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration has issued tough gas mileage standards for new cars and trucks hitting dealerships in the future.

The Transportation Department and the Environmental Protection Agency say the final rules will require 2016 model-year vehicles to meet fuel efficiency targets of 34.1 miles per gallon combined for cars and trucks, or the equivalent of 35.5 mpg with credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That's an increase of nearly 10 mpg over current standards.

Is the obamagod going to change the laws of physics while he’s at it? Add this to the repeal list.

Yep....EPA has taken all control away from the Congress. Our government is just a figure head now. EPA controls your life......along with your President.

I wonder if it impacts all auto/truck manufacturers equally?

"That's an increase of nearly 10 mpg over current standards."

Who knew it was that easy? Just a wave of the executive pen and it's done. "commander zero" is a freakin' genius or a light in the loafers worker or sumpthin'.

Each auto company will have a different fuel-efficiency target, based on its mix of vehicles. Automakers that build more small cars will have a higher target than car companies that manufacture a broad range of cars and trucks. The standard could be as low as 34.1 mpg by 2016 because automakers are expected to receive credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in other ways, including preventing the leaking of coolant from air conditioners.

This will come to be known as the "GM Clause"

The One is not bound by the laws of physics. He has decreed that vehicles will achieve 34 mpg, and so will His will be done.

Okay, there is a difference between cars and trucks. Trucks max out at 30 mpg....the current standard is 23.

But, that’s too aggressive.

I could see 25, but 30 is going to kill the industry.

More people dead in car accidents.

But, leftists never take responsibility for the consequences of their policies, and they won’t this time either.

I’m just going to “deem” that my SUV gets 35 mpg.

There. That fixes it.

But their intentions are good. That's all that matters; not results.

The stop thinking at what Sowell calls “stage one”.

Actually, they might think down the path a little bit,
but they always stop at the stage where they can say

“and now I feel good about myself”

I'm thinking that Mack and Peterbuilt are going to have trouble meeting this...and heaven help Terex!

Absolutely! Here in flyover country we don’t have emissions testing yet; if/when we do I doubt they’ll jack with antique titles or farm-tagged vehicles.

These clowns have obviously never had to haul fertilizer buggies or cattle or hay. I don’t have a spare $45K to do that.

My boy and I are working on 2 hauling rigs based on the 67-72 chevy/gmc style. Swapping later disc-brake Dana 44’s, power steering, etc. SBC’s are the cheapest thing around here to keep on the road ( I do have a 409 I’m thinking hard about using, though) and between salvage and aftermarket you don’t have to send a dime to Detroit.

Been reading up on propane, compressed nat gas and straight ethanol conversions for when they try to starve us out.
