You can be fined, and the plan contains provisions to give the IRS direct access to your bank accounts. Thus, the fine can be deducted by the IRS as soon as it is levied.

This only works for responsible people. I own a few rental properties. Many renters don't have any checking or savings accounts because the owe the IRS or someone a legal judgement. They refuse to put money into any account where it will be taken.

Except, as I understand it, it is not a “fine”, it is a “tax” and if you don’t pay the “tax” then you can go to jail. So yes, you can go to jail for not paying it.

Note how the “claims” are compound sentences:

ObamaCare will cause millions of elderly people to be starved and suffocated to death, and unicorns will fly out of Obama’s butt. Verdict: Partly true.

But the law apparently explicitly states that the IRS can’t use their confiscatory powers to get the health care money. So while they can send you dunning letters telling you to pay up, if you ignore them they can’t throw you in jail or garnish your wages.

Of course, they CAN audit your tax returns, and how many people are going to ignore an official IRS letter about interest and penalties, even if they are told the IRS can’t force them to pay?

That is a story about one of the health care bills from back in september of 2009.

We should be discussing the one they actually PASSED, which doesn’t allow for jail time if you don’t pay the fine.

But, I’ve never heard a single person mention jail.

That's where people who can no longer afford to live outside of, are going to commit crimes in order to go .
