new report by the CIA states that North Korea is continuing to make progress with its nuclear arms program and now has the capability to produce nuclear weapons with a yield of a "couple of kilotons" — or the equivalent of 2,000 tons of TNT. “The North’s nuclear test in May 2009 — apparently more successful than its 2006 test — suggests the North has the capability to produce nuclear weapons with a yield of roughly a couple of kilotons TNT equivalent,” the annual report to Congress for 2009 on arms proliferation states.

Additionally, the report said North Korea had announced it is beginning uranium enrichment at a “test stage” and is developing technology to produce fuel for a light-water reactor. In September North Korea reported that its uranium enrichment work had entered the final stage. The report also said North Korea’s long-, medium- and short-range missiles were tested with “increasing range and sophistication,” noting that various foreign states continued to supply raw materials and components to the North Korean missile program.

Additionally, the report noted North Korea’s relations with Iran and Syria “remain strong.”

“North Korea provided assistance to Syria’s covert nuclear effort starting in the late 1990s and retains the potential for exporting nuclear materials and technology,” the report said.

Key developments noted in the report include the April 2009 launch of a Taepodong-2 missile that passed over Japan. The missile “successfully tested technology associated with an ICBM,” the report said.

In April 2009, North Korea’s foreign ministry “publicly threatened to conduct flight tests of intercontinental missiles at an unspecified time,” the report said.

North Korea also is continuing development of a new road-mobile intermediate-range missile and a new mobile short-range missile with solid fuel, which allows for rapid set up and firing.

Iran is more advanced in its ICBM program than North Korea. North Korea still uses liquid propellant but Iran has graduated to solid propellant.

Since half of them are left wingnuts who only shoot at American superiors they've imagined into enemies of mankind, the comparison is apt.
