From Wiki, here's what you're advocating. (Sleep well.)
"The Romans pulled the Phoenician warships out into the harbor and burned them before the city, and went from house to house, capturing, raping and enslaving the people. Fifty thousand Carthaginians were sold into slavery.[12] The city was set ablaze, and in this way was razed with only ruins and rubble to field the aftermath."
I couldn't care less. They are interested in freedom and self determination, as are you and I. That they are Islamic is an accident of history. It was a relatively recent change, and a way to get allies against Russian encroachment.
Yes, Islam is all about freedom and self determination. I give you Saudia Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Egypt, Libya, Sudan and the list goes on. All bulwarks of freedom.....
You need to do some reading FRiend.
I was totally aware of what happened to Carthage. That’s why I didn’t say “The Chuckie Cheese Option”.
I will take liberty over freedom any day.
Islam = Freedom? I think not.
Your post implied Russian title to the Caucasus is invalid, while presumably American title to our West is good. Yet both nations acquired these areas in similar ways.
If you believe Russia should leave or be expelled from the Caucasus, what is your rationale for applying a different standard to America?
I’m perfectly fine with there being such a rationale, I’m just curious what yours is.
If they’re wiping out muzzies, I’m all in favor of it. It’s going to come to that anyway.
From what I've read, they weren't even very good Muslims. They drank vodka and ate pork and had little patience for the Arab Mujaheddin who showed up uninvited to assist them in their fight against the Russians while at the same time trying to impose their rigid interpretation of Islam on the locals.
Can anyone ID the make and model of those pistols?
My mother in law was a young teacher from Saratov, sent to mountain towns in Uzbekistan and Kirgizstan during the late 1950s. Her female students would come to her to say goodbye around age 13 because their parents had sold them into "marriage" (no doubt often to some old man).
- Even the old Soviet Union could never change those people. And we stand little chance of it unless trade and education pulls them out of the dark ages...
Then there is the Caucasus... One should understand why Russia owns so much territory to this day in the Caucasus regions. The Turks had a long history of raiding Christian enclaves in the Black Sea region, stealing children for the slave export markets and worse. Georgian and Armenian leaders begged the empress Catherine to help them, and so she did.
Excellent reading on this topic is found in a book called "Land Of The Firebird"; by Suzanne Massie. (BTW, - The author was President Regan's cultural adviser regarding Russia.)
By the looks of it, I am guessing the girl is holding a 9mm Makarov. The guy’s looks like the old Tokarev, but the sights and trigger are a little different.
To all who read FR:
To put some faces on the discussion, try this. Go to youtube.com and search for Dagestan. Watch some of the music videos. Decide whether this isn’t a culture and country you could enjoy.
I'm aware of the history of the USSR/Russia when it comes to the treatment of other cultures and ethnic groups within their territory. Admittedly, my feelings get mixed about judging who's right and justified in their actions, in this particular case. The attacks on the Moscow Theater and Beslan school do not further the cause of Chechens.
Given the history of islam as a whole and recently in particular, I find it difficult to sympathize with them. A two state solution, enacted by the UN in 1947, is answered with decades long conflict. Instead of taking resources by force, we engaged in commerce with ME nations. We enriched their nations and were repaid with embargo. Support in Afghanistan during the 80s was all but forgotten after the Soviets left. Intervention in Kosovo on their behalf during the 90s bought us no good will. Aid workers in post tsunami Indonesia encounter people with bin Laden t-shirts.
My point is, I do not believe it is possible to have any meaningful dialogue with this group on matters of peace. Events in various parts of the world have demonstrated that, in my opinion. Wars are terrible, and should be, so they occur with less frequency. I fear the modern methods of surgical strikes and small-scale conflicts have taken the consequence out of it. A good jab keeps your opponent away and less inclined to come at you; but the knockout is the only sure way to end the fight.
If Medvedev and Putin decide to employ "crueler methods" as they have promised, I won't root for them. At the same time, I won't lose any sleep over what happens to the people they target.
It is a 1948 Stechkin APS.

Quite a looker. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
